That's going to be one hell of a wall to build on THAT border !

jcsabolt2I have no problem with them leaving. The only requirement I have is that they take all liberals with them. Then we can begin building the wall.

Trying to think about it logically, if it were to happen, folks who chose to remain in CA would become citizens of the country of California and cease to be citizens of the United States. They would no longer be entitled to any services from the US government (USG), and would likewise not have any obligations to the USG. No more Federal income tax to file and pay, as well as no more SS, Medicare, etc. One presumes that the country of CA would jack up what was their state income tax rate to capture what was state plus what was federal (or more). While I have not been at all happy about how the USG has been pissing away my tax dollars, they would appears as rank amateurs when compared to the CAG's ability to piss away cash making its citizens' lives worse.
I can't imagine the USG letting the CA tax base get away, even if (though) CA is far more of a pain in the everything than it is worth.
I can't see it being allowed to happen for a multitude of good reasons. That said, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if a majority of CA voters were to vote for it. They have repeatedly proved that their stupidity is without bound.
If it were to happen, I'd have two happy problems to solve: Which free state am I moving to? and how am I going to move all this ammo? I'd be okay with those problems.

Yes.... I would not be surprised if they voted for it. That's when the fun starts!
The 'free shit' crowd will be in for a big surprise.

GWbikerI can see it now: California leaves the Union, becomes a separate country, declares war against the United States, quickly surrenders......then applies for a generous amount of foreign aid.

Yes, but the Grand Duchy of Fenwick "won" that fight, and it didn't quite go the way the Prime Minister wanted too.

Not to mention that without out water and electricity from outside kalifornistan their whole state would dry up and blow away.
One would have to look at all the taxes paid by California residents and companies and weigh that against all the Federal monies going back to CA, both to the state and to individuals. That still wouldn't give the whole picture though, as clearly there are less direct benefits from fed.gov, such as national defense, etc.
It may well be that there are other states that get a higher percentage back from fed.gov than CA does - I doubt all states has the exact same ratios. The law of averages would lead one to believe some states have a better deal and some states have a worse deal if one looks only at the cash flow ratio today. Really though, one ought to look at the whole picture over time. A considerable chunk of Federal coin went into the Central Valley Project and I am sure that is not the only example of Federal largesse.
Besides, as Elk points out, it is only through trading with other states that the enviro-whackos can refuse to do water planning in the state, in fact remove dams, refuse to allow power plants, and then suck up water and electricity like they grows on trees. Ditto for oil.
Someday CA may see the light, but I'll likely be long dead before that ever happens.

rekstromTotal fantasy. So Cali exits, and suddenly discovers it must create its own departments of Defense, intelligence, EPA, State (with consulates around the globe), etc, etc. Totally unsustainable without huge increase in .gov spending, which would in turn lead to a mass exodus to the USA. Whatever, good luck....

sjtillFrom today's LA Times, op-ed by leftist Connor Friedersdorf: Calexit would be disaster for progressive values
quote:
Imagine if President Trump announced that he wanted to oust California from the United States. If it weren't for us, after all, Trump would have won the popular vote he so lusts after by 1.4 million. Blue America would lose its biggest source of electoral votes in all future elections. The Senate would have two fewer Democrats. The House of Representatives would lose 38 Democrats and just 14 Republicans. The U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, among the most liberal in the nation, would be changed irrevocably. And the U.S. as a whole would suddenly be a lot less ethnically diverse than it is today.
For those reasons, Trump, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, Republicans with White House ambitions, opponents of legalizing marijuana, advocates of criminalizing abortion and various white nationalist groups might all conclude –– for different reasons –– that they would benefit politically from a separation, even as liberals and progressives across America would correctly see it as a catastrophe.
So it makes sense that the leader of the Yes California Independence Campaign, Marcus Ruiz Evans, was — contrary to popular assumptions — a registered Republican when he formed the separatist group two years ago, according to the San Jose Mercury News. He briefly hosted conservative talk radio shows in Fresno, and would not tell the newspaper if he voted for Trump.
