Look up Navigation Regulations a.k.a. Rules of the Road. There are also Rules of Engagement which usually have more specific criteria for shooting at people than if they "harass our ships at sea".

Pardon me if this question seems uninformed, but what's the deal with operating Army assets from Navy ships? Doesn't the USMC have rotary air assets? It just seems to me that this is one of roles that the USMC could handle, being a Navy service and all. Is this just one of those special occasions, like flying B25 bombers from he deck of an aircraft carrier to bomb Tokyo?

In light of the news that the USMC is reducing its capabilities, perhaps this is why the USAR is doing this kind of thing.

Louis B "Chesty" Puller was a Marine.

Calling Chesty Puller a “Marine” is kind of like calling Chuck Yeager a “pilot”

A slight understatement, no?

These close encounters with the IRGC boats is nothing new. Last year, the Lincoln CSG sailed through the Strait and was 'escorted' by a fleet of go-fast boats that were waaay too close for comfort.

If the Dec encounter didn't spark a change in ROE, did and the squadron commander chickened-out this time?

Well, since Chesty is not around to ask we'll never know.

IIRC, Army aircraft may not be certified for operation off of various Navy vessels.

Also, Army aircraft bring with them their own ordnance, which may not have been tested to Navy standards for Hazards of Electromagnetic Radiation to Ordnance (HERO). RF energy abounds on-board Navy ships (all those antennas) and unless tested, Army ordnance with electronic fuzing may be susceptible to this RF energy.

Maybe the Iranian "Navy" will get to see up close and personal what 20mm CIWS fire can do to their little boats

Watching the last video with the IRGC speedboats weaving within the course of transit for The U.S. Navy Ships, none of those speedboats had there deck guns linked up? Their tactics are about to change.

I foresee more warning shots at these bastards that might lead to them making direct fire responses. Then they’ll be shredded to confetti.

"too close for comfort" is relative. If the Iranians are carrying cruise missiles, then 100 miles might be "too close". Looks like these yahoos have machine guns and RPGs. I can assure you, somebody has optics on them continuously once they get within a mile. And I'd hope the ship is at GQ and ready to engage. Interpreting an "offensive action" the merits lighting them up is difficult. I'd say unlimbering a loaded pintle mounted weapon and pointing it at the US Navy ship qualifies.

This is analogous to you walking in a bad neighborhood and circled by some miscreants. At what point do you draw? When do you pull the trigger? and after it is all done, what do the police say? what do the media say? It can be a career ending decision.

Back in 1988 we had Iranian Boghammers and others cruise by us (meaning the USS IOWA) back during Earnest William operations in the Straights of Hormuz. Nothing new. None got close enough to run over. We'd go to GQ, and were ready to light them up with 5" 38s, or Mk-19 40mm / M-2 .50s if needed. "Warning Red, Weapons Tight" - means if they shoot at you, engage immediately. Shooting first takes direction from Commanding Officer.

We did put a 5" star shell between us and them one night, just to make sure they could see who they were heading towards. They turned around.

The Navy is already downplaying the President's tweet. If you're expecting the Navy to open up on the Iranians any time soon, you're probably going to be disappointed.

The air maneuvers by the Russians are much more dangerous and no one is suggesting that we take action against them.

Yeah, we're not likely to see an Iranian vessel blown out of the water anytime soon. So what was the point of Trump's warning? I don't know, but on a side note, it certainly didn't hurt the price of domestic crude oil...

Look up LB Puller ESB-3. ESB's are like joint service maritime FOBs. It's intended to be part of the Sea Basing concept that was introduced 15 or so years ago.

Those idiots weren't just in the path they actually had the balls to CIRCLE some of our ships.

Well, at least the Iranians are wondering: Was he serious or just internet bullying? Did he actually sign an order or is he just blowing wind?

I wish I was a fly on that wall.

I was on a Patrol Boat just like those above....you could sink em with a paint scraper! Ha very fast but lightly armed(25mm cannon and some 50s) no armor to speak of. The only reason they are that close is because the Iranian guns were not un-pintled and were not manned.

Yeah, we had some of their shitty boats mess with the carrier - the cruiser (CG), HH-60 with missiles / door gunners, and deck guns were manned and ready. If they had been pointed weapons anywhere near us they would have been pink mist. Yeah they might get the first "pop" off but that's the nature of being the "nice guys".

Even then the CVN kicked it into "high gear" and almost swamped the Iranian with the wake it left it in.

I'm reminded about the USS Cole- The ships are vulnerable to in close terrorist attacks. At those distances our ships would have seconds to respond and it would be too late.
