This is a remarkable story and the Navy only has itself to blame, those of you old salts who were Fireman, Boilerman and Machinist Mates will cringe at this one . The USS Boxer LHD-4, which was delayed out of maintenance, and then missed her deployment (should be in WestPac right now with its MEU) earlier this year, its been revealed the delays are tied to an ENTIRE department's incompetence. Where's the Top Snipe? The canary in the coal mine was the fire and destruction of the USS Bonhomme Richard LHD-6 due to suspected foul play and/or poor maintenance, now USS Boxer has missed her deployment due to sub-standard performance, machinery failure & leadership, and on the East Coast USS Wasp LHD-1 limped back to port the same day she departed due to a driveshaft problem. The West Coast/Pacific Fleet is down TWO big-deck amphibious ships, both of them (Bonhomme Richard and Boxer) were to deploy the new F-35B into the Western Pacific. The USMC is livid their MEU's can't deploy fully and are scrambling to come up with ideas on how to get their units out...I heard rumor putting detachments aboard surface combatants. Whoever is left won’t know how to maintain a ship but at least they will be DEI compliant. "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

I am a long-retired Surface Warfare Officer, but in my day the Amphibious Force was the red-headed stepchild of the surface navy. The best and the brightest found a way to serve elsewhere. I’m surprised the XO didn’t get canned if they are dumping the MPA. Did I miss the part about the Cheng getting fired? It sounds like the entire engineering side of the Chiefs mess needs to get shit canned, this size of a repetitive disregard for procedural competency cannot happen without the mess letting it happen. They also need to look at the other departments with a microscope. This may not be limited to the engineering dept but they are the only ones able to do their job and show the incompetence. If they can’t get underway, then Deck division can’t screw up an unrep. “We truly live in a wondrous age of stupid.” - 83v45magna "I think it's important that people understand free speech doesn't mean free from consequences societally or politically or culturally." -Pranjit Kalita, founder and CIO of Birkoa Capital Management

Character, above all else |
There is more to this story than just the Engineering Dept being unable to follow proper maintenance procedures and complacency. The very last sentence of the article mentions assault and failure to report incidents of assault in the Engineering Dept, so they might be waiting until criminal charges are brought. That said, you're absolutely right about the Cheng. "The Truth, when first uttered, is always considered heresy."

There is no more Chiefs Mess. They did away with them long ago. This is (in my opinion) why the Navy is having so many problems across the board.

The article appears to use the word “casualty” and “casualties” in a way I’m not accustomed to. These are apparently not human casualties, but damage to machinery and equipment causing loss of functionality. Is that about right? _______________________________________________________ despite them

This article has more detail. CHENG should be canned and sounds like possible criminal charges resulting in an assault. The ship had no Top Snipe, the top enlisted engineer, there's a problem. Main Propulsion Assistant is being forced-out.....yet XO was promoted to CO but, has a Letter of Instruction Who else is missing...LDO's and DivO's? I recall sometime in the 90's, I think just before the auxiliaries were changed to USNS ships, oilers and stores ships were the dumping ground for sub-par personal. Eventually reaching a critical mass where underway replenishment with battle groups was becoming an issue due to the large concentration of poor performers being lumped together in one place.

Needs a bigger boat |
One of the most common naval messages I see these days is a CASREP, that is a Casualty Report, referring solely to material/machinery casualties. Ships are getting old, parts are scarce and substandard in many cases, and the knowledge base both within the navy and in the contractor trades at US shipyards is on a steep downhill slope. Even with brand new equipment, parts availability and technical expertise is a real problem. MOO means NO! Be the comet!

Well he's a helicopter pilot so what do you expect? If you look at his BIO and his career path it's obvious he's a golden boy on his way to the top. that's one of the Navy's biggest problems is that they pick winners and losers early on. the Chiefs Mess used to correct these problems but , no more.

At fault: XO, Chief Engineering Officer, Lead Division Petty Officer. What the fuck were they doing? - Ex-Nuclear Machinist Mate. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." This is hard to believe and potentially a very costly mistake. You never, never put the reduction gear on the jacking gear without the lube oil pump turned on. Also an Ex-Nuclear Machinist Mate. Lacking a little honor, courage, and committment. Never before met people who will lie to keep their job when they generally can’t lose it. 10 years to retirement! Just waiting!

My good friends father is a retired E9. Senior master chief. Most anal retentive dude I know. He’d lose his mind seeing this. Next door neighbor is also a Retired master chief. Dude is wound way tight as well. Meaning both guys have immaculate garages and houses and everything they own is squared away and they are both very methodical. Navy isn’t making chiefs like that anymore ?This message has been edited. Last edited by: ElToro,

I find this difficult to understand. My entire concept of the military was that everything was very rigid, structured, with a procedure for everything including how to properly defecate and wipe. Every repair process had to be checked and double checked and signed off. How does this level of ineptitude even begin??
