I've flown some cheaper drones. $200 and lower without the FPV headsets. So I've got a decent comand of flying.

I've also spent quite a bit of time in 6 Degrees of Freedom Flight Games like Star Citizen flying with HOSAS.

I feel like it would be easy within reason for me to make a jump to FPV drone flying. It would be purely a hobby of just going out and flying. Maybe grabbing some neat footage from time to time. But not racing or anything.

Seems like the Avata 2 from DJI is a pretty good option out there. Right at about $1K. It is a bit high for entry. But I do like the features it has for the price point.

My other option was building one. I'm fairly tech savvy and can do some light weight soldering. Cons I might spend way more time building, programming & tweaking flight curves. Pros is I can repair it if I crash it.

Anyone out here a FPV Drove guy that can give me some advice?

Kind of at the same spot you are and I’m not even considering buying pre-built. The price differences are extreme. Curious about the feedback and input, though.

There are several shops out there that have bundles put together. Similar to https://www.getfpv.com/fpv-qua...ell-se-5-analog.html

I just don't think they have some of the return to home features, digital vs analog transmission, etc. I think I really want Return to Home. LOL... Just incase. Signal loss or other issues.

Honestly to get into fpv, I would buy or build a tiny whoop and learn indoors before venturing outside with something larger, faster and more expensive.

Also to get the most out of it, it is worth spending the time to learn to fly without stabilization (angle or horizon) turned on. This can be done with a tiny whoop as well.

I've built a few as well, a 4", 3", and a 2" in addition to a tiny whoop. I'm very much out of practice at the moment, and the controller protocols have evolved since then too.

I fly conventional UAVs as part of my job, and have considered adding a FPV unit just because.
The DJI Avata seems like the most logical choice, as you can fly with stabilization and then gradually take the training wheels off in increments.

$275 for goggles
$70 battery charger
$135 for batteries (3 pack)
$300 for radio, transmitter, receiver

Total $1120

Then you have to put it together and make it work. Not sure what kind of polished app and software you’ll have but it seems to me that the $1199 for the Avata 2 fly more (w/3 batteries) would be a lot less frustration especially for someone new to FPV with the training wheels it provides as well as the drone replacement insurance.



Pretty sure there is going to be an Avata 2 in my future…

This is kinda one of the reasons I'm leaning hard toward the Avata 2 as a first FPV drone.

Just the return to home, turtle mode, insurance, being a little more crash proof, all the modes it offer, gear compatibility with other DJIs...

Likewise… now that I have the Air 3, if I get the Avata I can use the goggles it comes with while flying my Air 3.

The replacement insurance is stupid cheap considering what these things cost and DJI has developed an extremely solid reputation for their drones and service/support.

Ended up pulling the trigger on the Avata 2 Fly more package. This thing is so much fun!

It's got to be the closest thing to being a bird. With it turned up in sport mode it's like being the hood ornament of a star wars speeder or something.

As soon as I get a SD card and can capture some content I'll get some posted up in a thread for you guys. If you are on the fence I definitely recommend it.

The RC controller that comes with it is so intuitive. 3-5 minutes with it and you can be zipping around hitting some gaps and zooming all around.
