Bummer. I like him.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz, the outspoken Utah Republican and influential chairman of the House oversight committee, announced Wednesday he will not seek re-election in 2018.

The Utah Republican, who’s been in Congress since 2009, confirmed the decision on Facebook.

“After long consultation with my family and prayerful consideration, I have decided I will not be a candidate for any office in 2018,” he wrote.

Chaffetz, a longtime fixture in Utah politics, has hinted before at potentially running for governor in 2020, and his announcement could be the first step toward that goal. In his statement Wednesday, he hinted at another run, but said for now he's going into the private sector.

“After more than 1,500 nights away from my home, it is time. I may run again for public office, but not in 2018,” he said, adding: “For those that would speculate otherwise, let me be clear that I have no ulterior motives. I am healthy. I am confident I would continue to be re-elected by large margins. I have the full support of Speaker Ryan to continue as Chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee. That said, I have made a personal decision to return to the private sector.”

Chaffetz told Fox News on Wednesday he will not run for Senate.

He arrived in Congress nearly a decade ago under rather testy circumstanes, defeating GOP Rep. Chris Cannon in a 2008 primary runoff. Cannon refused to meet with Chaffetz after that.

Chaffetz was more recently a leading figure in Congress’ investigations into 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email and server as secretary of state. In his role this year, he's also had to navigate how to address ethical complaints about the current Trump administration.

I also liked him...right up to the point he turned into an attention whore and had to be in the middle of everything. I'm sure the good folks in Utah can send us a quality man or woman to replace him.

Interesting. Romney is said to be interested in Hatch's seat. I wonder what is up with Chaffetz.

Jason is my rep. Bummer. I bet we haven't seen the last of Jason. I would vote for him over our current governor.

By they way he puts himself in the spotlight, he seems ambitious to me. Seems quite feasible that he's got designs on building his political resume.

Chaffetz said that he's not sure if he'll finish out the current term in the House.

"I will continue to weigh the options but I might depart early,"

I suspect marital/family issues. Being away from one's family can do that. I've got the T-shirt.

Or, donning my tin foil hat, perhaps he knows something we don't.

A job with Fox would probably bring a lot less aggravation, and continued media exposure if he has future ambitions. It would be nothing for Fox to give him seven figures, which would be an enormous increase versus his Congressional salary.

Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz — who shocked the political establishment when he announced his retirement earlier this week — said that he has already started looking for post-congressional employment, and hopes to serve on boards of directors and link up with a television network.

“I might depart early,” he said in the interview. “It’s not tomorrow, it’s not next week. If it is, it’s going to be in the months to come.”

Asked if he is resigning because of a yet-to-be revealed scandal, Chaffetz said, “Absolutely, positively not.

"I’ll take a little bit of time to sort out. I’d be thrilled to have a television relationship. But there’s a number of things I’d like to do.”

Also from that article:

“I started poking around to see what I might be worth and what sort of possibilities are there,” Chaffetz said in a phone interview with POLITICO Thursday afternoon. “And I got a series of ‘Let us know when you’re serious.’ Well now I can say, ‘Can you tell I am serious?’
Roll Eyes

He just got re-elected, and a few months into his term he's talking about quitting to line his pockets with a TV deal and some plum corporate board positions? Sure hope there's more to the story. Can't imagine the voters of Utah will look kindly on this if he runs for governor in 2020. Guess we'll have to see how it all shakes out.

Now that Fox has all that extra salary room with O'Reilly not drawing a check, Chaffetz might be able to make a sweet deal.

Luckily, I have enough willpower to control the driving ambition that rages within me.
