Along the Virginia-Carolina coast, this is pretty normal and has been going on for a long time.

Elk HunterNC has a few varieties of poisonous snakes. Rattlers of various types, copper heads to name a couple.
We generally just leave the alone unless they are in an area where small children frequent.
We came across what appeared to be a breeding ball of copperheads in my daughter's wood pile.
Since they had several dogs and visiting children we killed all of them. Some pretty good sized ones in the mix.

DaveLI've seen quite a few swimming between the shore and the small barrier islands along the coast, usually less than half a mile out. They definitely don't mind saltwater.
There is a larger island about 3.5 miles off the town my grandfather grew up in (just north of Tampa). He said the island was infested with rattlesnakes until the early '40s when some intrepid locals let a dozen wild hogs loose for a few months. Then had a big beach BBQ.

eltonrWhat I want to know, is What it was doing in the Roped off nesting area. this was installed by states environmentalist to protect the Birds while in their nest, and to keep out those that would harm them.
the Environmentalist need to Ban all snakes from the dune areas, during nesting season. and personally detain any trespassers.
