I need to attach a neodymium magnet to an aluminum rim to trigger a sensor.

Is there some sort of adhesive that has a reasonable likelihood of working?

Alternatively, another way to mount it?

This is on an ATV wheel, so rough service is a given.

Devcon "home" 5 minute epoxy.

In the double syringe, squeeze out a blob of both epoxy and catalyst, mix it up and apply.

It is like thick honey and will run/sag, but if I can, I will rotate the part around 6 degrees for about 5 minutes until it sets, then let it cure.

It's pretty solid in about 30 minutes, and a few hours for complete set.

I get it at Lowes.

Does it need to be on the edge of the rim? If not, what kind of double sided adhesive is use for stick on wheel weights?

On the edge of the wheel, could you take a regular wheel weight, drill out some of the lead, and fix the magnet into the hole?

I'm sure someone will have a better idea.

Are you saying to work the part back and forth a few degrees until it tacks up?

Hmmmm. Assuming the clip on a regular wheel weight is ferrous, that would give the magnet something to stick to. Might have to look into that.

In order to give the sensor a clear shot at the magnet, it pretty much has to be as far out on the rim as possible to clear the brake rotor and caliper.

JB Weld is so retro.

The stuff you want is 3M VHB tape. Google it and you will see that it is amazing stuff that works in many different environments.

You can buy it on Amazon.

Al the stick on wheel weights I have seen come with the adhesive already on them, not separate.

3M makes some really really good double sided tape in various thicknesses for body trim and etc. It ain't cheap but you could probably stop by your local auto body shop and bum a small piece. It would be less messy than an epoxy.

No, not for what you describe, a little puddle would be fine where it is slightly welled up around the circumference of the magnet.

I was referring to other uses, like I had a plastic grille on a car that the stud boss was cracked and broken off, so it has a couple of 90 degree supports, and when I put the mixed epoxy on it, it wanted to run off leaving the application too thin to do any good, so I did it again and just turned the whole thing every which way for about 5 minutes to keep the epoxy on the surfaces and that was that.

Just in case you or anyone use it, it is a nice thing to know to keep it from flowing off the area you need it.

And it can be filed, sanded, drilled and such.

I have done very similar, mounting rare earth magnets to casting reel frames, using shoe goo/E6000. Super tough bond, and a little goes a long way.

There's an EV Roberts product we use at work specifically for this application. I can't remember the product number right now, but can get it for you in the morning.

It's a two-part epoxy. You can let it cure overnight, or even heat it to speed the cure.

God bless America.

The VHB tape is fairly good, better than other tapes. 3M 5200 would work, but takes a few days to cure. 5 minute epoxy is very weak as epoxies go.

Aluminum oxides quickly, which typically causes epoxy bonds to fail. If using epoxy, sand the aluminum first, then apply some of the wet epoxy and continue to sand. This keeps the aluminum from oxidizing. Aluminum expands with heat, so using something like 5200 often works better as it has some give to it.

On my Honda CB360 cafe racer I use a bicycle speedo (a particular one that will do up to 160MPH), that requires a magnet to trigger the sensor. I glued a 2mm thick neo-whatever magnet with some 5 minute marine epoxy to the rim and it was good for 2 years. I completely covered the little magnet on both sides with the glue (since magnetic fields go through the glue)to secure it even better. I did re-do it though because the epoxy turned an ugly yellow with age and looked like crap on the chrome rim.

Barring glue, you can buy the neo-whatever magnets in a round form with a screw hole in the middle that you could use to screw/rivet or something the magnet to the rim.

Barge will attach just about anything, to just about anything. It is a commercial contact adhesive widely used in the leather (saddle making) industry. Just get the yellow can instead of the blue.

3M 5200 if you never want to remove it. 4200 if you do.
