I have a 2011 Toyota Venza that came with a Navigation System. I've looked through the documentation and don't have a specific make/model of the system...guess it's just the standard system Toyota was installing back then. What it doesn't have, that I wish it did, is the red and green guidance bars depicted on the screen via the backup camera when you're backing up. I was visiting my bro this past weekend and his 2016 Tundra has that feature, and I'd really like to get them, if able.

To that end, does anyone know if there's a firmware upgrade that would update the system so that the backup guidance bars would be "installed"?

Thanks for any and all assistance...

I think some mfgs actually etch/print the lines on the camera lens, if they aren't the type that sweeps with the turn of the wheel.

From other makes/models, I don't think I've seen it as an add-able option.

No "Guru but... And don't have a Toyota but... I have updated both the Maps and firmware on my Mazda myself. Mazda has free nav updates for 3 years. After that I suppose paid updates. ?. I find the current installed map and firmware versions buried in the menus, and downloads of new versions on the Mazda website. You can also request the dealer do it.

If some snooping around on Toyota support doesn't get you an answer a call to the service manager at your dealership might. Also might search on Youtube for how to update Toyota Nav System. I expect an ~8 yr old unit might not run the latest version but you may still be able to update.

Collecting dust.

You sir like us with a 2012 Highlander are flat out of luck!!!!!!
Unless you feel like fooling with installing a complete new head unit that is compatible with iData link.
I wish the Highlander had an option to replace the system with a decent aftermarket one. sadly the design does not allow this to be done easily.
The Venza on the other hand does.

On the 2011 Venza, it's very unlikely that a software update would be available to add the guidance lines. These lines are typically generated by the camera itself, or the head unit, or by an interface module in some systems. Some aftermarket radios can generate lines, and in those cases they can typically be adjusted, and turned on or off. You should go into your settings menu and make sure that the lines are not optional.

I did some quick research and at least one of my vendors at some point offered a camera that would generate lines that would work with the Venza. It currently shows out of stock, by I can inquire if you have any interest. It is not a factory replacement camera, so it would have to be mounted separately. Probably $250 or more for the camera and parts. Installation is not that simple, depending on your skill level.

If I were you, I'd look to replace the factory Nav with an aftermarket radio with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. These have much more user friendly interfaces, and being internet based maps and data are automatically updated. With a head unit that generates lines, you could get what you want with the OEM camera. Let me know if you want to look more into it.

Lastly, there are static lines, and dynamic parking lines that move as you turn your wheel. You will not get dynamic lines.

Not so fast! I think I have good news for you. I'm assuming you think there is not a mounting kit available because you have factory nav, as there definitely is a kit for the non-nav. This just came up in my store- Metra says the only difference is that the Nav head units have the hazard button incorporated into the head unit.
They say you can buy the Metra kit that says it's for non-nav, and then buy the Toyota hazard switch for non-nav head units. They had a Toyota part number, but I don't have it handy.

Look at the Metra 99-8222:

http://metraonline.com/part/99-8222

Look at the kit instructions and you'll see that the factory hazard switch snaps into the bottom of the kit.

The Metra kit also comes in brown. And a Maestro RR and a TO1 will do the trick.

Thanks for the learned replies, folks. Yeah...if it's NOT something as simple as a firmware/software update, I can pretty much make it through life w/o the guidance lines. 1st world problems, eh? Smile

It never hurts to ask. I've had people come in with working backup cameras that want to add the proximity sensors that beep. I guess so you'll get a warning even if you're NOT looking at the camera.

You'll be just fine. Smile

honestlou thanks for the info.
Last I checked been maybe 6 months or so the Maestro did not work with the JBL system but it appears they have added it.
I’ll email you as I have some questions and don’t want to clutter this thread.
