Yes. I won one auction outright, and was high bidder on an auction that did not meet reserve and was able to negotiate a deal with the seller after the auction closed.

yes. About eighteen months ago I was the high bidder on a 1975 Triumph TR 6. I overpaid but I was determined to buy that particular car. I was not disappointed. Did you have any particular questions about the process?

That is good to hear Stlhead. I was beginning to think it was some kind of scam.

I've been outbid twice in the closing seconds.

Bidding on a car in Orlando for my oldest right now.

I threw down a bid that's $1,100 over the Kelly Blue Book because the mileage is so low and its so clean.

Five (5) days to go so we'll see.

Always wait until the last minutes of ANY auction to bid.

You are just giving someone else 5 days to justify spending more, or find additional funds, etc. Let the car sit, monitor it, and bid your number as it’s ending.

That way, the other bidders either are ready to outbid you, or ideally they have a hard number they will not exceed, and you don’t give them enough time to reconsider.

I suggest waiting to the last seconds, calculate how long you need and don't give anyone time to outbid you. Won lots this way on smaller sites, make sure to bid your max to see if you're a winner!! As always, you don't know how much someone else's max bid is, so I wish you luck!!

BaT adds 2 minute if a bid is made at the closing minutes of an auction. No last second sniping on there.

Watched a couple go well past the 'close' time & get run way up.
Notable was a Solstice GXP swapped Volvo P1800, went on a solid half out past the finish time.

Sadly, the Genius Garage Lykan didn't fare similarly. Someone got a bargain on that one.

I have bid multiple times over the last few years but have never won. BAT constantly sells vehicles over their value, some are just outrageously over value - yet people still purchase. BAT is proof that there is no shortage of people with money to waste.

I wasn’t talking about sniping, but more the common sense approach. If you bid in the last few minutes, yes the auction will be extended by 120 seconds… but if the other bidder isn’t present, there is no possibility of a counter bid. Also, you are only giving them 2-15 mins to react, whereas the OP is giving other bidders 5 days to talk themselves into spending more. It’s just plain common sense not to bid until the end.

Damn, that takes all the fun out of it! Never saw an auction like that. But Ebay was my experience up until last year, when the wife to me to a live one here in our country life towns. People are willing to pay stupid prices at those. We didn't buy a thing, just wasted half of a good summer day Mad

Go into it knowing what you are willing to pay, and exactly what you want. Do not start bidding until the last 20 minutes of the auction. Raise by a percentage of the distance between your max and the current, but never less than $250. Ask lots of questions and be active with the seller to make sure you are comfortable with the vehicle. Check out the sellers previous auctions. Unless you are willing to waste money it will most likely take a good many tries to win your first auction.

Oh, forgot these two points, never bid before the last day of the auction, and never start out with your max bid. They charge the high bidder at the end of each day a fee, and refund the fees of the unsuccessful bidders, and the auction price goes right to the bid you place. If you lead with your max so one will always feel like it is worth a tad more, better to move the needle up tit for tat. There are times when a big move can work as a knock out bid, but often big jumps garner more bids because people think there is more room.

I’ve been on the other side, a seller. In December 2019 I sold my BMW 330Ci ZHP coupe on BaT.
The process was flawless.
As others have said, get all your questions asked and answered in the first few days, and bid on the last day.
The value of the bids on my car more than doubled that final day. Know your limit, and gradually bid up to that in increments. The 2-minute timer reset at the end really keeps things above-board; it weeds out people pretty quick.

Share the link to the Auction!!!

I think it was a year or so back a member here was in a pretty good bidding war on a vehicle.
It was a lot of fun watching it. He ended up giving up as the other dude really wanted the car apparently as it ended up going for silly money.

Just sold a car on Bringatrailer and it worked out great for me and the buyer. The 2-minute "last bid reset" makes it fair for everyone - there can be no last second sniping.

Definitely a "seller-friendly" auction site and their fees are very reasonable considering the exposure.

Interesting thread. I follow BAT, with special interest in several makes/models of cars. We have rendered bids a couple of times and dropped out when our limit was far exceeded. Some cars are beginning to garner more realistic bids (IMO), but there is often a reserve on those cars.

I can see buying, and not driving, a select few cars. I’ll never understand those selling a Porsche or Corvette with 2000 miles on it after many years of ownership— unless it’s a very limited run car. I would at least like to see enough miles on a car to know it got through the warranty period. I’m just not interested in a 996 with 1850 miles on it.

I think sharing the link would be frowned upon by the boss.

BAT is about to be a site I don't visit. As others have posted everything sells way overvalue.

That's where I am at on it.

That's why I started to think it was a scam to get the reserve money, use it, then refund it while always collecting new reserve money.

I've put my final bid in on the car I am pursuing, pretty much a F-you bid. If someone comes in over me then they are insane.

Be sure to factor in the buyers fee.

Lots of great stuff on BaT but I'm not willing to overpay to the degree necessary to win an auction there.

yeah the Reserve is set by the seller. All I am saying is that there are a lot of people, the same people over and over, that bid cars up. These particular buyers have many, sometimes hundreds of bids, but never win any auctions. Very strange....

I call them Fluffers.

I have sold a car on BaT and bought 2 from Cars and Bids but it was back before the used car pricing madness came around.
