Assuming this is the Kia Soul hitting the loose wheel?
Looked like something out of a movie, amazing no major injuries.

Yes... in the blink of the eye...... be careful out there.... Did the driver of the pickup notice any vibration or steering pulling to the left???? can it be proved catastrophic failure on the truck parts??? If not then somebody needs to be held responsible for lack of maintance. .... drill sgt.

Wonder if that truck got his tires at Sears. Sears Automotive, trusted name in automotive service.

The tire keeps rolling hitting the Kia a second time. That was insane. The truck's tires appear to be sticking out well past the fenders. I've never had a wheel fall off. One would think that if the lugnuts just loosened overtime that there'd be some vibration both felt and heard. Maybe they were over-torqued, stretching the studs, and the studs just let go.

Sometimes, those tires being outside the wheel well, I think is due to adaptor plates being used. Those plates may mount say, Ford rims to another brand and vice versa. That little car got lifted straight off the pavement.

I hadn't thought about adapter plates. I've changed my mind though about the studs failing. The picture below is from between 28 and 29 seconds and I believe it shows the brake rotor is still attached to the wheel which would indicate the spindle failed.



That’s one way to pickup a spare.

Another possibility is hub spacers. The truck appeared to be outfitted as a bro dozer and a frequent bro dozer accessory is hub spacers to make their wheels & tires stick out further.

While this video is more recent and way more popular, there was another video going around some months ago of the same type of accident at lower speed. Some people initially said the other was faked, but this being another of the same flip-over-loose-tire, its very much a real occurrence. I want to say the other video was a 2015-ish Explorer…

Bearing failure goes right along with wheels being spaced out. Thank goodness for dash cams or we’d never been entertained by this. Glad no one was seriously hurt.

Yes that is the rotor all right. I have a friend that has owned an auto shop for decades. I've seen some of things that people have had towed in. You would be amazed how long some people will drive on something like a failed wheel bearing. Than say something like it just started making a noise. Some of the stuff he gets with bad brakes and wheel bearings is just crazy.

When this was around the last time I think people were blaming the spacers on the pickup.

Having wheels outside of fender wells at one time was illegal & enforced by police in TN.

Holy crap!!! That was scary.

I have seen a wheel fly off like that once. A large F450 dually work truck. Doing 70mph down the interstate. The wheel flung 50ft+ into the air and rolled off the shoulder.

Had an acquaintance at a client's business who was riding a motorcycle, sedan coming the opposite direction. The wheel flew off and hit him and the motorcycle. That was 18 months ago. He is lucky to have survived. I saw him last week for the first time since the accident, he will never be the same person he was before the accident.

I thought the tire whacking the back of the vehicle after launching 10 plus feet in the air was an unnecessary insult to injury.

Me and a couple friends were tooling down I-5 once, returning to Portland from somewhere in Washington. We were just entering a cut where they had built the road through a hill instead of over or around it. A couple hundred yards or so ahead of us, we saw a tire careening up the side of the cut. It had parted company from whatever vehicle it belonged to. We watched it slow, stop and then reverse and start rolling back down the hill toward the highway. We slowed way down to stay out of the danger zone. It wound up stopping before it reentered the roadway, but there was a bit of a pucker factor for a few seconds.

That is EXACTLY what I said when watching this!

This is also a good illustration of the risks of open wheel racing. The rotation and grip of a tire rolling at speed can launch cars/bikes in ways that are hard to imagine. In this case not really that fast, and the car was just launched, not magnified by a wheel on it rotating in opposition coming into contact with the wheel.

That nobody was seriously injured is a miracle.
