Florida officials said Monday they will convert the state’s trucking weigh stations into immigration checkpoints and step up on-road inspections to enforce a federal requirement that commercial drivers be proficient in English. The initiative, announced jointly by the Attorney General’s office and Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson, seeks to identify and detain motorists who lack legal immigration status or who cannot communicate effectively in English while operating commercial vehicles.

Simpson told reporters that drivers found in violation will be turned over to local or federal authorities and may face arrest. Deputies stationed at highway intersections and weigh stations will also conduct routine traffic checks, with seat-belt enforcement folded into the broader operation.

State officials said the move complies with an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, which directs states to remove from service commercial drivers who fail federal English-language standards. They did not provide an implementation timeline or estimate the number of drivers likely to be affected, but warned that enforcement would begin immediately at all points of entry into Florida’s highway system.

I frequently come across CDL drivers from Miami Dade County that either speak only Spanish or Creole so this should get interesting down here.

I'm all for the checkpoints, they do bottle up traffic though. The one outside of Sierra Vista AZ drops your speed from 55 mph down to 30mph.
The 30mph is a rather long distance before you stop, I suspect it's to get the drivers attention.
If they are using dogs, that wait at the stop is longer.
This averages adding 15 minutes to your travel time on a good day.

California has co-located CHP commercial vehicle scales & inspections with CBP at major locations. Not all stations but, not unusual to see CBP vehicles posted.

Back in the late 80's when I was still living back home in Detroit, it was time to renew my DL and went to the local DMV office when they were everywhere. Stopped in and no one was there except an old guy wearing a turbin hat and a young girl next to him helping fill out some sort of form.
I mentioned to the clerk that I am here to renew my DL and she proceeds to give me a plastic covered 8x10 sheet with the outlines of traffic signs, and points to some of them and ask what is this, stop sign what is that, railroad crossing and what is that a yield sign, OK you passed. Took all of 30 seconds.

I asked her why the change and she mentioned that alot of the people coming in could not speak English so the state streamlined the process to give them a DL and the old man filling out the form with the help of the girl was acceptable. Not surprising that Cali gave that guy a DL as this has been going on for a long time in certain locals.

Last time I renewed they were blocking access to the visual field machine. Evidently some one that could read the chart was memorizing it and providing that info to people that could not read English

In the very old days, but in my lifetime, those drivers coming from Mexico were prevented from driving in the USA. Trucks were transloaded at the border.

Then we had an earth-shaking change in legislation, and all sorts of issues came up. Tariffs. Years of litigation, regulations and changes to regulations, etc. Even research papers on the subject.

But, the intent was to open the border to allow non-US citizens to legally operate, within the rules set forth here: https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/inte...ent-nafta-fact-sheet

I remember NAFTA being a very bad idea. I still think it was.
