Just switched to YouTube Tv from Dish because of this exact issue a few months ago These stupid contract issues with Sinclair are really pissing me off, and I hope Sinclair and Fox Sports loses millions on this. https://ftw.usatoday.com/2020/...ts-sinclair-reaction YouTube TV announced on Thursday that as of Saturday, February 29th, customers will no longer have access to Fox regional sports networks or the YES Network, both owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group. YouTube TV was not able to reach a carriage agreement with Sinclair and cited “the rising cost of sports content,” which means that thousands of fans across the country will have to find another way to watch their favorite NBA, MLB or NHL team. YouTube TV noted that other providers have also cut Sinclair-owned channels in the past over similar contract disputes, such as Dish Network and Sling. As discussed in the threads about cord cutting, many people are moving to the no-contract streaming services so leaving YoutubeTV is just one of the several to choose from in the marketplace. I just did a paid month on YoutubeTV and went to Hulu for a free week where I'll do a paid month. It seems that cable and streaming services will always have these disputes, but at least we're not locked into contracts which prevent us consumers to allow market forces shape the services with month to month payment. I've posted about this several times here on SF. At the risk of boring those who've already seen it... Sports content is far-and-away the most expensive content on TV, bar none. (I believe second place goes to the carriage fees local broadcasters charge cable and satellite providers.) Back in the bad old days of most TV viewers being hogtied by cable and satellite TV, sports channel subscriptions were affordable because they were being heavily-subsidized by the rest of the cable/satellite lineups. As more-and-more people abandon legacy cable and satellite TV for à la carte programming and OTA TV, those subsidies are shrinking. This forces sports content providers to raise their prices, which causes those who buy those packages to raise theirs. Or drop the packages. "How bad can it get?" you may ask. I'm no authority, but, in an interview I heard several years ago an ESPN representative claimed sports channels, alone, with no subsidy, would cost subscribers as much as $35/mo. per channel. I wish they sold cable and streaming packages with a no sports channels option. I have read that $10 a month of your cable bill is just for ESPN. I don't care about sports and would rather save that money.

Sports is what keeps cable relevant at all today. A long time ago, I realized the only reason I had cable was mainly for the History Channel, Weather Channel, CNN, and ESPN/FSN Channels. History and Weather became ... something else. Sports I don't give 2 sh*ts about now, and we all know what happened with CNN. The NFL and CNN made it super easy for me to cut the cord. Building a couple of DVRs for over the air content made it more so. Combining that with plenty of fantastic original content on Netflix and Amazon. A major plus is not having to see commercials if we don't want to. Ever.

uh yeah, the reason I haven't watched baseball in my own home in 30 years. Sadly it's what took me away from being an avid baseball viewer. I would watch ANY baseball game, anyone playing at any level. But I was priced out of it, refusing to have the associated cable bill. (the saturation of games with in game sponsorship and live reads has driven me away from radio as well and MLB completely, but that's a rant for a different thread) _____________________________________________________ Sliced bread, the greatest thing since the 1911.

That, the relatively confusing technical challenge of streaming TV, and intertia. It's true one of the first questions I get when the subject of switching to streaming TV comes up is "what about sports?" But then comes explaining what they'd have to buy to get the other stuff they want. Sports aside: For most people that means signing-up to multiple streaming services. Then there's what streaming device to buy. Then, to truly save money there's the challenge of OTA TV. The antenna, alone, will put many people off. OTA DVR? Now it becomes really complicated. Contrast that with arranging for cable or satellite TV, then pick your channels. More expensive, but a lot simpler. Particularly if you already have it. Honestly, for what it cost us for me to set up an OTA TV network tuner, DVR, and streaming boxes we could have had a cable package that would have given us all of what we wanted, and a bit more, for 2-3 years. But I enjoy technical challenges and putting stuff together.
It's been nearly forty years for me. Ever since the baseball player's strike in 1981. That so-disillusioned me in major league baseball I never watched or listened to it again. I believe that was the genesis of my disillusionment in all pro sports. "America is at that awkward stage. ESPN is the main reason I went with YTTV, for the F1 coverage. The Enemy's gate is down.

I look forward to the day when sports are only offered ala carte. The contract re-negotiations will be hilarious as will the de-escalation of the hyper inflated sport salaries of today. ____________________________ Yes, Para does appreciate humor.

At this point I dont see a point in leaving YouTube for Hulu just to get Fox Sports West. Im willing to bet Hulu or ATT will run into the same issue with Sinclair regarding RSNs. So far I have been very pleased with YouTube TV. Dumping Dish was way over due. It sucks I wont be able to watch my LA Kings, but they are in last place so maybe this isnt such a curse. Oh stewardess, I speak jive. |
Not watching much sports on TV is how I've been able to cut the cable for so many years. Missing televised sports doesn't matter to me at all, so the current way is great.

I'm very happy with MLB.com audio only. $20 per year for every team, every game both home and away radio feed. And a big plus is there is silence between innings, no commercials. I think you can even watch a delayed video broadcast but I've never tried. For me baseball is best when heard on the radio. As far as these stand offs go - someone always blinks. ________________________ God spelled backwards is dog
