What suggestions do Sig Forum members have for books, videos etc. on street smarts? I am not talking self defense techniques here but clear simple suggestions as to how not to be the victim of a crime. The earlier post about pick pockets got me thinking. Thanks

My suggestion is to possibly find someone you or a friend might know and gain knowledge from that person.
Someone who has street smarts from experience.

LEO's make great sources for learning street smarts I'd think. I know a couple and it amazes me what they pick up in a career.

I agree. I have a number of LEO friends and grew up in the inner city of Chicago. Experience is the best teacher I agree. I was just looking for some current material on the subject. Thanks for your responses and taking the time.

Definitely "The Gift of Fear".

"In The Name Of Self-Defense" by Marc Macyoung has some of the very best "Street Smart" info on how criminals operate an how to handle it and I highly recommend it. However, it has some issues with the writing and major editing issues that are a distractor. That said, the "meat" of the book is excellent and well-worth it. I read it in small chunks on kindle.

William Aprill is among the leading violence researchers I'm aware of.

https://aprillriskconsulting.com/

His "Unthinkable" program is fantastic. I took six pages of notes during his class.

You can get some of the info from his Ballistic Radio interviews:

As far as books:

The Dark Side of Man by Michael Ghiglieri

Journey Into Darkness by John Douglas

Threat Assessment: A Risk Management Approach by James Turner

Violent Heart: Understanding Aggressive Individuals by Gregory Moffatt

Van Horne and Riley's "Left of Bang" is worth a read too.

"Left od bang" is a good primer. It is a summary of the Marine "Hunter" classes and cover great deal of human shows and tells.

Can't say enough good about Dr. April. Heard him speak, have taken his Unthinkable class and his block at Tac Con this year. My wife, who grew up in Miami is is pretty Big City savvy recommends his coursework.

I's also suggest that you stop over at www.totalprotectioninteractive.com (TPI) and read through the threads there. Tons of great information.

Larry Lindeman, Paul Sharp and Craig Douglas all have great material on the subject.

Move to Detroit for 3 months, get an apartment down town. If you survive you'll have all the street smarts you need

I will pass on that. Grew up in Chicago. Moved to the South. I might visit Grosse Point.

this guy was never a cop no matter what he claims. He mentions holding people for 48hrs without charging him. That is bull and violation of the constitution. That is police 101 this guy never investigated any kind of robbery.
