There are very few places I go to get bagels in my area. I think some bakers make what they think a bagel should look/taste like and have no clue of what they actually are and wind up with some kind of roll. I enjoy a good bagel and cream cheese or a bagel sandwich.

Better late than never:
I was at Sam’s Club this morning, so why not? I’m sure now though that what I had in our cruise was lox and not smoked salmon. No onions either, which is doubly bad because last night my wife asked me to pick up onions if I went to Sam’s Club this morning.

German, lachs: salmon. Yiddish, Americanized to "lox," usually referring to smoked salmon, but "lox" could mean any salmon, smoked or not. Unless the context indicates otherwise, "lox" is usually taken to mean smoked salmon. Same thing. Best I ever had was Scottish smoked salmon on a British Airways flight from London to Barcelona. Even better than the excellent hand-sliced-to-order that is sold in every "appetizer" store in Brooklyn.
Onion? Definitely needs a slice! Some folks, my wife included (but not me), also like a slice of tomato. A sprinkling of capers is also a popular option.
My bagel choices for this, in order of preference: garlic, onion, plain.

I thought lox was cured in salt rather than smoked. What I had on the cruise was saltier, didn’t really have a smoke smell or taste, and had a smoother texture than what I bought at Sam’s Club today.
I would have done capers, but my three kids method of putting things in the fridge is to shove stuff in from the front. Nothing is ever in the same place twice, but I sure there’s capers in there somewhere.

Garlic? Just curious, did you ever find your garlic pickles? I’ve had a craving lately and can’t find the garlic pickles. Claussen used to make a really good one. .

Nope. Looks like they have disappeared from the face of the earth without a trace.
Claussen was my first choice, Ba-Tampte is a decent second choice. Publix used to carry both, can't find either one any more.

Apparently Claussen pickle shortages have been a thing since 2020 with the cause attributed to the fact that the amount of glass recycling is down, causing a shortage on glass pickle jars that Claussen uses.

I had a blueberry bagel from Dave's Killer Bread this morning. Better than Thomas bagels.

I have tried Dave's, was not impressed. Thomas has decent English Muffins (especially the buttermilk, when they're in stock) but Thomas bagels are meh.
Best grocery store bagels I have found are Ray's New York Bagels, in the freezer section. Ray's also has good bialys.

Neither HEB nor Kroger carry Ray's. Both grocer's freezer sections for bagels focused on health not flavor - gluten free, superfoods, vegan, etc.

My wife and I grew up on the Jersey Shore. The area we lived in had some of the best freshly baked bagels outside of New York City.
The bagel store in our town was so popular you could not get in the parking lot on Sunday mornings and if you were luck enough to find a place park the line to get in the store was around the building, the bagels were that good.
For several years after we moved to Florida my mom would mail us bagels every few months and when we came home we would bring them back to Florida vacuum seal them and freeze them.
Finally a few years ago a store opened up about a half hour from us that made fresh baked bagels every day and on Fridays they made fresh Bialys. The store manager told my wife the dough comes from either New Jersey or New York and the bake the daily.
Edit to my above post: they only make Bialys on Thursdays not Fridays. This message has been edited. Last edited by: 71 TRUCK,

Where is that, please? Store name and location? Your area is a bit of a schlep for me, but I do get there occasionally.

They have three locations, two in Clermont and one in Eustis. The one closest to me that I go to is on Hwy 27 North past Lowes and Walmart a few miles north of Hwy 192.
The next closest to me is on Hwy 50 West in Clermont near Oakley Seaver Dr.
The one in Eustis is on S Bay St near East Lakeview Ave.
We have only been to the one in South Clermont. I would call before going to check there hours of operation and what bagels the have. When my wife and I go we always call first. There bagels are the closest we have had compared to the ones we would get back in New Jersey.
