kkinaOne-third of San Francisco w/o Power
A third of San Francisco in the dark (let the jokes begin). Possibly caused by a fire at a substation.
Reports of Waymo cars shut down in the middle of intersections, possibly with passengers trapped inside.
Not helping is the Bay Area at the beginning of a long atmospheric river.
Also a gunman is in a standoff in a hotel off Market Street. Not sure if related to the blackout, but the hotel is in the outage zone.
We've got a couple forum members in The City. Hope they're OK.

OrgussThat would be a serious liability if you couldn't manually unlock a Waymo. I know you have to pull the handle twice to unlock them, but don't know if that's purely electronic or just a fancy physical two-step process.

bronshtI have power but last week the power at my home was out for several hours. If I were younger and in better health I would move to Tenn. Alas, I am here.

kkinaWhat's weird is that 22 years ago, to the day, a fire at the same substation caused a blackout of nearly the same magnitude. And even that wasn't the first time.

konata88Why would the cars just suddenly stop? No graceful shutdown like pulling over to stop?

kkinaI read a rumor that Waymo cars would stop at controlled intersections, confused that the traffic lights weren't providing the data for safe crossing. Probably the worse place to brick.

trapper189Only 2/3 more to go and the literal state of San Franciscans will match the figurative state of San Franciscans.

But they rarely make the same mistake 3 times.
Sorry for you and the other Forum members who live there. Hard to believe sometimes that it used to be one of the most beautiful cities in the U.S.

Rey HRHSupposedly by 1 PM, 99% of power was restored. A relative texted me that.
I suppose his power was restored; I don’t know if the 99% figure was fake news to let those still without power think they just had shitty luck.
"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
