Steve CollinsSocial Security Application
I finally talked a friend of mine into going to a Social Security office and applying for Social Security. They told him he can't apply in person! He has to apply online! I've never heard of such a thing before! Is that really true? Anyone know for sure?

parabellumI don't know for sure, but I can see the SSA doing this these days.
I know you can apply over the phone, speaking to a real person. That's how I did it. This is probably the best way, because you have a representative with you during the process, to answer questions you have about the process.
Yes, you must first have an account, so, have your friend go online and register, then give SSA a call. The woman who assisted me was super.

P220foreverI just applied for full retirement benefits (age 66.5) about 6 weeks ago.
I already had an account setup with SSA from when I applied for Medicare so it was fairly easy to get the ball rolling. It went very smoothly online and I never got a call like they said commonly would happen to verify certain details - I guess they already had everything they needed from the earlier Madicare call I got from them after applying online.
Got approved after about 3 weeks and I start collecting $2,997/mo starting in April.

urbanwarrior238I walked into the local office over a year ago and signed up on the spot. My service rep was very helpful. Maybe 2 other customers in the building..and the security guard

ridewvI made an appointment to go in and speak with someone but that was 5 years ago. However a friend who is trying to figure out whether to collect on her, or her husband's (they are now divorced), made an appointment to go in and speak with a person. So they must still do this on an appointment basis.
No car is as much fun to drive, as any motorcycle is to ride.

oddballI walked into the Social Security office in Ft Worth without an appointment, it was like the DMV; I got my number into a waiting list at a computer kiosk and waited an hour before my number was called. The woman at the window was extremely helpful, gave me an activation number to set up an account and instructions on applying. I had to wait a few more months, I was not 62 yo yet, and when the time came, I applied online, it was very easy.

patwI wonder if they are doing this, computer filing, to also make it a deterrent for some older people to get into it, as I know many people who don't know how to use a computer. At least you can still get an appointment and get some help with it.
It's amazing/shame though how many in the government will bend over backwards for illegals to get money they never earned but helping those that contributed, only gets more complicated.

Rey HRHI'm thinking it has to do with the local office. Before winter, i drove a guy to his appointment to apply for social security. He said it was appointment only, not online. I also know another person who applied online but that was during Covid.
"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

selogicI applied online . Nothing to it . You create an account where you can log in and get all sorts of information and print statements , etc. Seems to be one of the few things the .gov does right .
