ArtieSIs anyone watching the launch of SpaceX Falcon Heavy?
I watched it from a roof top in downtown Orlando. The entire office staff of my client was out there on the roof.
Very cool stuff.

Agreed. Word is the last burn to leave Earth orbit and head past Mars into heliocentric orbit was successful.

That and some of the higher altitude launch footage looks so fake!

I know it wasn't, and maybe it's because it was on a small Youtube window, but I kept thinking "I can't believe how phony this all looks".

Funny - you aren’t the only one -

bubbatimeI drove over to my mom's house today and spent the day with her. Had a very nice view on the water. Toes in the water at launch time. An amazing day for the American space program. I took these screen shots off the SpaceX live feed. How fucking cool are these pictures!! REAL pictures,so ridiculous, they look fake, but they are MFing real!
Launching a convertible to Mars is epic. That guy is epic.

But still, watching that side by side landing of the twin side boosters was magical. SciFi becoming reality. Amazing!
Their release this morning apparently pointed to missing the drone ship by 328 feet with a collision speed of 300mph after only one of the three engines refired on landing. That explains the debris sprayed across the ship deck.
Hard to believe they don't have a camera or three in the area surrounding the ship, but I understand not wanting to release that video and they can do what they want with it. Regardless, a pretty cool venture.

RAMIUSWhy'd they choose to land the center rocket on the barge?
Did they need an extra challenge?

As I understand the center core has to be landed at sea since it goes up much higher. To return back to land would require much more fuel usage. So it is more efficient to land at sea. Shortest distance and such.

The center booster burned longer to get the second stage higher before separation. That ends up with the booster not having enough fuel and too much velocity / too many miles to reverse and land back at Kennedy. So they simply make a parabolic arc out of it and "catch" the booster with the drone ship. You see this happen when the place a satellite into high orbit or have a heavy payload and burn more fuel. Very cool solution.
