What do I need to know about NC laws in reference to my guns? Permits, etc for each gun?

No permits needed on any guns unless they are nfa class 3. If you buy a hand gun in N.C. you will need to get a permit from your county sheriff. Get your N.C. ccw as soon as you can and then you want need a permit to buy a hand gun.

no permits necessary for ownership of non-NFA firearms. so bring your guns -- no registration

no restrictions on ARs or mag capacities

you need a CHL for concealed carry. issued by the sheriff of your county. processes vary 'a little' county to county

open carry is legal

unlike some states -- NC is not great for concealed carry in your car without a CHL. in other words -- they do NOT treat your car like its an extension of your house.

"It is unlawful to carry a concealed handgun in a vehicle unless the person has a valid concealed carry permit.
A person who is not a convicted felon may carry a handgun if not concealed.
A handgun is concealed in a vehicle if it cannot be readily seen by a person approaching and if it is readily
accessible. A handgun under the front seat or in an unlocked glove box or console is illegal. A handgun
openly displayed or in a locked glove box, locked console, or in the trunk is lawful. (this page last modified 01/26/16)"

NC does have a Castle Doctrine concept for home defense scenarios

generally -- its not a horrible state for gunowners. not super - but not terrible

The owner of handgunlaw.us posts here. I can only speak to the veracity of their site relative to my state, but they are spot on.

"I have a NFA firearm and I’m moving. What do I do?

A registered possessor of an NFA firearm, other than a federal firearms licensee/special occupational taxpayer (FFL/SOT), may not lawfully transport in interstate or foreign commerce any destructive device, machinegun, short-barreled shotgun or short-barreled rifle without prior written approval of ATF, specifically the NFA Branch.

Approval for the transportation may be obtained by either a written request, or an approved application filed with ATF on Form 5320.20, Application to Transport Interstate or to Temporarily Export Certain NFA Firearms. Please note that applications to transport NFA firearms will be approved only if consistent with all state and local laws."

When I moved in NC from one residence to another, I wrote a letter to the ATF based on the back of the form 4 paperwork I had.

They sent me a blank 5320.20, and had a post it note in block 6 and wrote “permanent change of address “.

Filled it out as it applied and mailed it back.

Same thing when we moved to TX and got our permanent address.

Thanks again. I have filled out many 5320's and know about them. I just don't know what the local LE require. I don't know yet just where I'll be moving and have plenty time to find out.
Probably just show them the paper work and make a copy of it. That's what my county sheriff did.

For the move, you don’t have to inform anyone except the ATF, and there is no requirement for you to check them (any guns or NFA items) with anyone except the ATF. And by sending them the form, you have notified them. There is no gun registration in NC.

Don’t poke a sleeping dog....NFA items are legal in NC, if you move to a town where the sheriff doesn’t like nfa stuff you have alerted him to it. And to you....good luck getting a pistol purchase permit after that.

I would only bring it up if you want something new and need a Leo signature. When I got my first item the sheriff wouldn’t sign it.(And I was a cop) I lived in the city and had the chief of police sign it. You can also get the local DA if he’s not a raging liberal.

When I moved and turned in the form to ATF I asked if I had to send a letter or copies of the form 4 to my new jurisdiction and they never answered me. So I never sent copies to the local chief leo.

Sometimes less is more.

LEO signatures are not required anymore, at least for Form 1's or 4's. I think they stopped that several years ago.

The ATF Form 4 process has changed.
In regards to Chief LEO, you only need to notify them.

The Form 4 has two sections, one goes to the ATF, the other you mail to you local Chief LEO.
Their is no requirement for a signature nor any acknowledgement from the Chief LEO.

Instructions are on the Form 4 which can be downloaded from the ATF website.
Always read the directions and check to ensure you are using the most current form(s) posted by the ATF.
