My dad just got a new Comcast Xfinity cable box and I just installed it for him. I believe it is the X1. The box and remote looks like this

My question is - do you leave this thing on 24/7, or do you turn it off after you are done watching?

My dad thinks to turn it off as it gets hot, but I think it's supposed to be left on.

I never have had TV service of any kind so I have no idea, I just know how to hook it up.

Mine has been on since I got it several years back. No problem other than a little wasted power.

Designed to be left on. The box can get hot because it is crammed into a tiny space, give it plenty of room around the sides and top. There is a power saver option but most folks freak out when they turn on their TV and the screen is still black so I have them change the settings. I can't stand the new remote, much prefer the prev gen one. Mostly what drives me nuts is when working with a customer and they say "The screen says to press enter.....should I press enter?"

Houston Texas, if the heat don't kill ya, the skeeters will.

Mine is a different x1 and I’m not sure it is able to easily turn off. About once a year I have to unplug it.

The cable box doesn't power down, stays on all the time (you can't power it down). The power button on the remote can be programmed to power up/power down your TV and Home Theater devices.

Let me help you out. Which way did you come in?

IIRC it basically stays on all of the time anyway, and just toggles the front panel lights.

I think it has to be unplugged to actually shut it off.

If you do power it down or unplug it, it will take a while for it to resynch and update itself.

It can’t watch you when it’s off. Eek Smile

Seriously though. They are designed to be left on all the time like a Roku or Apple TV etc. All of those devices need a power cycle now and again.

Haha, you only think you turned it off...

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."
