Flooding on Guadalupe River in Texas hill country

arfmelFlooding on Guadalupe River in Texas hill country
The 29’ flood crest at Hunt is the second highest in recorded history. My prayers for those folks affected by this.
Deadly and 'catastrophic' flooding unfolding along Texas' Guadalupe River
A "catastrophic" and deadly flooding emergency was unfolding in Texas on the Fourth of July as heavy rains caused the Guadalupe River to rapidly rise.
People have died in Kerr County and roads were flooding in Kerrville, a city of 25,000 people about 60 miles northwest of San Antonio, authorities said.
"This is a catastrophic flooding event in Kerr County. We can confirm fatalities but will not release further information until next of kin are notified," the Kerr County Sheriff's Office said. "The entire county is an extremely active scene."
Residents were urged to shelter in place and not attempt to travel. Anyone along creeks, streams and the Guadalupe River should seek higher ground, the sheriff's office said.
The area was under a flash flood warning and between 5 and 11 inches of rain had already fallen by about 9 a.m., the National Weather Service in Austin and San Antonio said.
"This is a very dangerous and life-threatening flood event along the Guadalupe River! Move to higher ground!" the weather service there said.
Earlier in the morning, the Guadalupe River at Hunt in western Kerr County had already reached the second-highest level on record at over 29 feet, surpassing levels of the 1987 Guadalupe River Flood at that spot, the weather service in Austin and San Antonio said. The 1987 flood killed 10 teenagers on a church camp bus and van on July 17 near Comfort, Texas.

old rugged crossGood grief, so many places could use some of that rain. Hope it works itself out soon.

whanson_wiMany of the streets/roads in and around San Antonio went through dips rather than over culverts. Downstream of these dips, you'd often see "dragons' teeth", essentially tank obstacles, that were there to catch any vehicles that tried fording at the wrong time.
Long way to say - flash floods a recurring hazard in that part of Texas.

I would like to apologize to anyone I have *not* offended. Please be patient. I will get to you shortly.

ftttuThe Guadalupe is notorious for flooding. My uncle went to Schreiner in the ‘50s there when they had a 1,000 year flood. The coffins in the graveyard at or next to the campus popped out of the ground in the flood waters. He said it was crazy!
We lived there back in 2005, and the river flooded badly at least two times then. They replaced a bridge we used every day that would disappear below the flood waters regularly. Wondering how that new bridge will handle this current flood.
I live about a mile from the river, but I’m safely elevated above it. If y’all are aware of our drought situation, this type of rain is what we’ve been waiting for.
Canyon Lake, which is the Guadalupe River dammed north of San Antonio and northwest of New Braunfels will be receiving these flood waters. Due to a recent drought the river has only been flowing when it has flooded. The lake is in desperate need of this rain. It provides water to the surrounding populations and provides a tourist economy, which has been decimated due to the drought. Really sad to hear of the many deaths and property destruction, but that’s the nature of the Guadalupe.

arfmelThere’s a lot of summer camps for kids at Hunt, on the river banks. I know at least one of the camps was partially washed away. There are reports of kids who haven’t been located yet, several hours after the flood crest. If anyone is inclined to offer prayers for them I know it’ll be appreciated.

AglifterI think anything along the Guadalupe is gone.
My brother sent a video driving across the Sidney Baker bridge - I think it’s the highest one, unless the new one for the loop is higher.
The water has almost reached that bridge.
The river banks are so side there, that’s an amazing amount of water.
I heard talk about putting in more retention dams, with the intent to trap some of this kind of water in areas to recharge aquifers.
/I think part of this is cedar break vs the old grass and live oak Savannah.

Approx. 23 girls are missing at Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian camp. Prayers sent.

Holy crap, that's just from rain? Not a collapsed dam or something? What's that river usually look like?

MikeinNCThey’ve had a lot of rain in the last 24 hours. It appears to be a huge swirling rain mass over the area that isn’t moving -just turning and dumping rain, almost like a hurricane.
Here in Temple (2hours northeast of Kerrville) we’ve had 7” in just a few hours. The soil is clay and rain runs off. There are flood flash warnings every time it rains hard.
I saw a little while ago where they found 2 of the missing girls alive and they were plucked out of the water by a helo. Also the Cajun navy is there assisting.

jer830My prayers are out to the missing and to all in the area. This is just tragic.

Never underestimate “just rain”. If you have a stagnant system over your head that keeps pouring, you’re going to have flooding. Never forget that “just a tropical storm” Allison in 2001.

arfmelAreas upstream from Hunt reported as much as 14” of rain in 24 hours.
July 05, 2025, 12:30 AM
92fstechI looked up that camp on Google Maps, and it appears there are several dams in the area, one right upstream from some of their cabins. Plus all the hills feeding water down into the river, I can see how it could have risen really fast.

old rugged crossI pray all those girls were found safe or rescued.

ibandaMy 20 year old Neice is a counselor at Camp Mystic right now. She was on the Cypress Lake site and all the girls on that side of the camp are all accounted for. My Sister drove over to the evacuation point tonight.
I don't have all the info yet, but I fear a whole cabin of 9 year old girls at the Guadalupe River site got swept away last night. The river rising 26 feet in one hour at 4:00am is bad news. I understand survivors on the river camp site were helicoptered out, due to the road being washed out.
I've been stressed out and can't see God's plan in this at all today.
I have a few SIGs.

drill sgtAugust 2016 we had a stalled out rain event occur in southeast Louisiana that dropped approx 33 inches of rain in 2 1/2 days which deposited 41 inches of flood waters in our house.....We were Rescued buy boat at approx 1 am hours and taken to high ground for 2 days till later moved to another rescue site........ When you get large amounts of rain in a short period of time it has got to go somewhere if it cannot soak into the ground. ............................... drill sgt.
