My wife is heading to Nashville for a conference and CE in August. I have mandatory vacation to take so I'll be heading along.

Nashville is someplace that neither of us have been before.

Looking for recommendations on What to see, do, and eat. Also of places to avoid (either that don't live up to the hype or could be questionable or dangerous)

We will have a car and a couple days on either side of the conference, and would be comfortable driving within an hour radius of the city.

As far as food, we are eclectic and have no real strong aversions. Interests primarily lie in history, but you can't go to Nashville without experiencing something of the music.

Several battlefields and civil war plantations near Nashville if you like history.

Jack Daniels distillery is cool but a bit of a drive.

Many good places to eat, many good bars and live music on Broadway

My wife and I were there 2 weeks ago. Nice place, but it was hot as heck.

Hard to go wrong. So much goodness. Just wander.

On the history side, Andrew Jackson's Hermitage is an interesting place to visit. If you check their website you can see if they have any special events that might be of interest. I went last year and got to see a demonstration of how duels were carried out. Very interesting.

Printers Alley. There's a Jazz club that's always a lot of fun.

It was once more of a back alley - now very touristy.

Don’t be surprised if the GPS is almost entirely useless in the downtown area. Otherwise it’s a decent place to visit.

Lower Broadway for night life and live music. Martin's or Jack's for barbeque, I preferred Martin's. The Ryman and the Country Music Hall of Fame are great if you follow that kind of music. Milk and Honey for breakfast. Expect to either wait, or sit at the bar. And get the biscuit with red eye gravy. Party Fowl has good hot chicken.

Sorry, Printers Alley has seen a shooting or three, a couple stabbings over the years.

I mean it’s not Chicago but....

George Jones roof top bar is nice if the weather is decent and it's not too crowded. Great view. Legends Corner is my favorite spot for music but there are many good ones.

Not sure if it's still open but the Skull Room has a great prime rib and entertainment.

For food, check out the Pharmacy. It's a little hard to find in East Nashville, but I think they have really good burgers. I love their cherry phosphates. They also serve brats, but I haven't tried them.

I am going this weekend, the lady and I like “the listening room”. It is a singer songwriter show with dinner. Really good talent and only a couple hours. We do a 6 pm show then head to broadway.

The Pharmacy has great old school sodas. The food is decent but the attraction is the old school drinks.
