Jim Lovell, Commander of Apollo 8 and 13 missions, died at age 97
Here is a pretty long but very well done article from AP Science on Lovell; how he became more famous from NOT walking on the moon than from walking on it.
He also read the Bible to the world from Apollo 8 on Christmas Eve, 1968. It was from Apollo 8 that the first photo of the earth from space was taken.
Even among astronauts, Lovell was a remarkable man.

I heard that on the news while I was driving from Camarillo back to Monrovia

he had a great life, a remarkable career

I think there are only six Apollo astronauts still alive

Including Buzz Aldrin, bless his soul. Don't claim to his face that the moon landings were faked!

It's just a national disgrace that we haven't returned to the moon until now. But private rocketry and space exploration is upon us!

That event is etched in my memory, to me it was as if the whole world stood still the day they landed...RIP Captain Lovell

While he is famous for Apollo 13, his prior missions were all remarkable and courageous. Apollo 8 was perhaps the riskiest mission NASA ever launched, with so many unknowns and zero chance of recovery for numerous possible problems.

I vividly recall standing with my dad in the back yard looking up towards the moon during 13 and asking if the astronauts were going to get back. I must have been 8 yrs old. Everybody was fixated on their safe return.

There were two Apollo astronauts that I had hoped to meet but alas never had the chance. One was Jim Lovell and the other was Gene Cernan.

I'm sorry to hear that. He was a great man and I had the pleasure to hear him speak in person once as the keynote speaker at a conference that I attended. Getting to see him in person was the coolest thing about that whole event.

My parents removed all restrictions on watching tele during the Apollo 13 mission to get back.

That was cool.

They did it for Munich ‘72 as well.

Lovell was a superior engineer and pilot. I wish I’d met him.

Same thing here. I went to a convention thing in San Antonio in the late 90's sometime. I was so pleasantly surprised when they announced the speaker that afternoon. What a pleasure and a treat to hear the Apollo 13 story first hand. The man was an inspiration.

We properly complain now of some of Tom Hanks’ doings, but he was superb in Apollo 13, playing Lovell. Of course he went on to produce Saving Private Ryan, and the HBO series about WW II. And the TV series From the Earth to the Moon.
