Video: Woman Narrowly Escapes Death During Carnival Swing Malfunction

On Sunday at the Throne Fair in Paris, France, one young lady found out there's something much scarier than carnival meat food poisoning.

In the clip (below) that's going viral, a man is seen giving the thumbs-up sign as two riders attached to the 164-foot-high swing called "Adrenaline" are sent flying through the air. Then things go from fun to "There's no place like home" in a millisecond:

As the riders near the ground staging area, one of the girl's harnesses breaks and sends her head straight down leaving her hanging by her feet as she comes within inches of death.

On-lookers are horrified and can be heard screaming and moving away from the disaster as a worker arrives at the platform attempting to reach the dangling girl as she hurtles past. Eventually, another man joins to help and the two men grab her when the ride slows down enough.

The NY Daily News reports:

Management at the fair told local French news outlet France Bleu that it was a "miracle" the girl was not injured.

"It could have been a lot more serious," management said. "We are here to give joy and not make people so afraid."

Management said that the ride has been shut down and is being completely dismantled.

On Monday, the girl and her mother filed a complaint with the local police about the ordeal.

When asked if there's an upside to this near tragedy, one carnival stoner told reporters, "Totally. Not only is she an inch taller, Cirque du Soleil offered her an internship."

“Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.”

It's a technique called "volcano".

My wife showed me this yesterday. Apparently there have been a few instances like this recently at French carnivals around Paris.

Any taller and that woman wouldn't have a head, and the onlookers would've gotten a shower...

They had one of those at Opryland before it closed. I tried my best to talk my wife into it but her common sense overcame my lack of it. Big Grin

My Dad has been a Facilities maintenance man all his working life, mainly in HVAC.

He would take us to Great Adventure in NJ and let us ride stuff but was always nervous about it all. Those little traveling fairs and carnivals with the mobile rides? We were banned from going on those flat-out.

He always says "somewhere there is a maintenance guy who ended up with a couple extra bolts he doesn't know where they go and just chucked them into the bushes..." Eek

Wow. At least, no one tried to be a hero and tried to stop her the first time around. That would have been something I would be foolish enough to do possibly causing more injury to both of us.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.
