LinkA Florida woman shot and killed a man who returned to her home after an argument early Saturday and tried to use a tire iron to smash his way inside, authorities said.
The shooting happened just after 6 a.m. in an unincorporated area of Auburndale in Polk County, Sheriff Grady Judd said at a news conference. Judd said it appeared the “shooter was perfectly legal to defend her home from a burglar.”
“You have a right to protect yourself in your home and be free from home invaders, armed burglars, and certainly he was armed with a tire iron and making an attempt to come in through the window,” Judd said. "She stopped him. She stopped him permanently.”
"Blessed is he who when facing his own demise, thinks only of his front sight.”

BBMWThese stories are a two inch single column on page 8. An armed home invasion is front page news. So people who don't know better thing guns are evil, and only used by criminal.

bigdealRead closely the comments by Sheriff Judd. Oh if we all could have police chiefs that think and function like this man. The man does not mix words and he tells you exactly what he's thinking.

But as usual, they didn't mention the caliber of the gun used so You'd send the wrong thing. That's on the media, not the sheriff or the lady in question.

220-9erAn example of nothing good happens after midnight. This was the least bad outcome.
Probably all four were doing stupid things with stupid people in stupid places.
Some alcohol could be involved. No sh*t.

Archie TeuthisNo surprise that Grady Judd gets re-elected every time.

Sig209kind of a weird story.
local news says they were all together (2 couples)
the men left the women. the men later came back and one tried to break in and she shot him.
wonder what the initial evening activities were that led to such a violent encounter.
in any case -- the assailant chose poorly.

One word...Alcohol. Excessive amounts of alcohol consumption very rarely leads to positive outcomes.

It's true. Sheriff Grady "That's all the bullets we had, or we would have shot him more," Judd does not mix words.

straightshooter1Yeah, he's a bit like Donald Trump in that either you love him or despise him. But, IMO, he's one of the best sheriffs in this State. Anti-crooks and pro-2nd Amendment.

He loves his press conferences but he’s plain spoken and unapologetic in his duty to take the fight to bad guys. Seems like a good trade to me.

You'll note, the people who usually have the most issues with Judd are the one's his department have to interact with on a regular basis. The rest of us like the man for exactly who and what he is.

snorisHere's the news release from the Polk County Sheriff's Office.
There is one grammatical error---the third word in the last paragraph should be "had."
The Polk County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred in the unincorporated area of Auburndale. Preliminary information so far is as follows (and a full briefing of these events is available on the PCSO Facebook page as a live video dated August 22, 2020
www.facebook.com/polkcountysheriff).
During the late evening hours of Friday, August 21, 2020, four friends (two men and two women) went to a pool hall in Lakeland to hang out. They left the pool hall and went to a liquor store where they purchased a bottle of whiskey, then drove to a house on Ellie Road in Auburndale. The house belonged to one of the two women. They arrived around 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, 2020.
Around 6:00 a.m., the other woman (not the homeowner) and her live-in boyfriend - 34-year-old Joshua Mathieu - got into a heated argument. Mathieu's friend (witness) told Mathieu that they needed to leave, in an attempt to de-escalate the argument. The two men left, but Mathieu, who was still angry, decided he was going back to the house because he wanted his girlfriend to come home with him.
Mathieu immediately began banging and kicking the front door, demanding that his girlfriend come out. He then went to the car, where the witness was still sitting and observing everything, and got a tire iron. He used the tire iron to break out a front window on the house, screaming and irate, and threatening to kill the two women inside.
The homeowner retrieved her handgun, and fired towards the suspect, who was forcibly breaking into the house. She then called 911. When first responders arrived, Mathieu was deceased.
Joshua Mathieu has a criminal history dating back to 2010, including several battery arrests (in 2013, 2015, and 2019), two burglaries, and several disorderly conduct arrests. The investigation is ongoing.
