Hats to wear when visiting a subsidiary?
It may not matter. Most senior folks know me, and we now make it a point to spend more time talking to the lead people at subsidiaries, either on the phone or in person, so that they feel more connected/not like they’re being neglected for another.

So far, almost all of them are the kind of places where it’s normal to wear a ball cap/required to keep my head covered. When visiting a subsidiary, which ball cap should I wear?Subsidiary brandOverall brandCowboy hat/other stuff I wear for “the public”

Overall brand, or a fez.

The fez is very popular, you know.

ETA: I will use a military analogy to get to what I mean, outside of the "fez" comment which is, hopefully obviously, a joke.

When I was stationed in Germany with 3ID, there was division, and then 4 brigades. Each had it's own motto. Division was "Rock of the Marne" 1st Brigade was "Raider Brigade". I was assigned to Division, but stationed at 1st Brigade. When I was saluted by a 1st Brigade guy, he would salute and call our "Raiders" I would return salute and call out "Rock of the Marne". Thus, we each identified our unite identity with pride.

I would apply the same rule here. If you are Big Brand, identify as such. Let subsidiary Brand have it's own identity. If they want to, they will give you a hat to make you part of their team, and if such, you should wear it.

'Looking considerably further back than fun times splashing around in his pool as of late, Johnson recollected, "The hat thing started — I'll never forget, I used to play the working men's clubs in and around the northeast of England, and we would really rock."

A fevered onstage performance meant perspiration was assured, which proved to be trouble for the frontman for a number of reasons.

"It was a grand little rock band called Geordie, and I used to sweat because they didn't have any air conditioning," he continued, "And in the winter especially, the clubs were full and they'd have the heating full up because it was freezing outside. I always used to sweat, and my hair... all the sweat used to go in the eyes and sting."

Meanwhile, his brother Maurice had, at the time, just bought a new sports car. To round out his appearance for his new wheels he also purchased a new cap, which came in handy one sweat-soaked night.

Elaborating on the night that ultimately made rock history, Johnson went on, "We were halfway through the set, and I was sitting having a beer with him, and he said, 'Your eyes are red!' I said, 'I know, it's all the sweat.' He said, 'Yeah, put this on.' And I said, 'Oh, I'll try.' And I put it on, because in the north of England, everybody wore caps — you know, after the war and all that, it was a kind of uniform for the Geordies and Yorkshiremen and people like that."

Speaking to the immediate effectiveness of this cap, the singer praised, "And I wore it for the second half [of the set] and I went, 'That's marvelous! It's brilliant!' I said, 'I'm gonna buy one of them!' And he says, 'You can keep that. I'm not putting that on.' So I did."

Some great choices

When visiting a neutral party I always wear either a hat with and American flag or a US Army hat.

If they get offended by those, well the conversation/visit is probably over anyways.

Top hat…

Oh, and a monocle too. It projects a “don’t fuck with me” attitude. Unless you look like Colonel Klink, then ditch the monocle.

I agree with Artie here, unless you want to test out the fez.

Or I could send you one of these:

Wear whatever logo the local sports franchise has.

The people who follow that kind of thing will think you are one of them.

Sounds dumb, but it works.

I do wear a bump cap in certain areas. Big fan of them in general.

Not sure who said no one wears ball caps in the Northeast. Maybe in the cities?

Pretty common in the farming areas/small towns.

Related question: How hard should we push the centralized brand story?

The “parent” website is little more than a set of links - it has no direct consumer contact.

I’m thinking about putting a history/philosophy/adage company blog there, to parallel the “Family Wall” we have at the plant.
