New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio was interviewed a few days back by New York magazine

He was asked, “In 2013, you ran on reducing income inequality. Where has it been hardest to make progress? Wages, housing, schools?”

De Blasio:

"What’s been hardest is the way our legal system is structured to favor private property.

I think people all over this city, of every background, would like to have the city government be able to determine which building goes where, how high it will be, who gets to live in it, what the rent will be.

I think there’s a socialistic impulse, which I hear every day, in every kind of community, that they would like things to be planned in accordance to their needs. And I would, too.

Unfortunately, what stands in the way of that is hundreds of years of history that have elevated property rights and wealth to the point that that’s the reality that calls the tune on a lot of development."

Oh yes, we all want that, comrade De Blasio...

Not surprising, but what a fucking idiot. Wonder if he'll offer to surrender his wealth and property to the public.

The nonchalant manner in which he and others say shit like that is what strikes me as the most outrageous part, next to the ridiculous idea itself. Hey fuckface... there are a great many people who don't want any such thing, me for one.

that might a really good example of urban renewal - much like an earthquake taking out LA, San Francisco and Sacramento...all on the same day - it would be a wonderful thing to have all those socialist enclaves destroyed once and for all

An extra-bizarre comment because developers in Manhattan are a huge part of the political fundraising scene. You don't want to be on their bad side. But it's not like they're gonna vote for a Republican, right?

If he agreed to take the smallest, most rodent- and roach-infested efficiency apartment for his entire family and extended family, in the highest crime rate area in NYC, and have that apartment lack alarms, guards, locks on doors or windows, and most important of all, have no one there able to own or carry a gun or any other form of legal or illegal weapon, then, and only then would I tell him his idea for a communist eutopia is absolutely stupid.

He can't actually make anything productive for society, all he can do is take from others. Not surprising someone like him is in this position, politicians are NOT the best we have to offer - quite the opposite actually.
