Nearly Lost One Of My Two Best Friends Yesterday
And he's still not out of the woods Frown

He was up north, snowmobiling with family. He apparently suddenly became dizzy, lost control and ran into a tree. Broken collarbone, broken ribs, collapsed lung. I'm guessing probably at least a mild concussion, as well.

On-site they thought he was a goner. His eyes were rolled back and he was gurgling.

Luckily one of his nephews, a big, strapping man who, among other things, logs for a living, was with them. They were able to get one of the trucks in there, get him into it, and into emergency at a nearby hospital. They couldn't do anything for him there, so he was stabilized and transported to a larger facility here in S.E. Michigan.

He's still in the ICU. I won't be able to go visit until tomorrow.

I'm sorry to hear of your friends' accident. I hope he heals up soon.

A lot to be said for those who can think clearly, improvise and execute a plan.

Best wishes for your friend's recovery.

A sad occurrence. Very good that help was available and knowledgable. Prayers he will be OK.

I have some idea how you feel. One of my Best Friends was shot some years ago (he's a cop). I nearly went crazy trying to find out how he was. He came out OK, though.

My nephew is an ER doc in northern MI. One of the big issues there is med evac. Here in rural southern MI, we can get a chopper from several services to take a patient from the scene or the initial hospital directly to a Level I trauma center. Where he practices, that is not really an option due to the lack of helicopters.

Hope he has a good outcome.

Thats difficult losing any good friends, lost just about all my closest friends to date. It never gets easier. I wish your friend well and will add a prayer for pulling through.

That would have done them no good, in this case, anyway. They had no cellular service. That's how far out in the sticks they were.

Thanks. I haven't had a chance to talk to him, yet, but another close friend it turns out was right behind him when it happened and has talked to him, since. He says he'll be all right.

Thanks to everybody for the well wishes!

It sounds like he has a positive attitude. I wish him well. I almost lost a friend in a similar accident, only it was on an ATV and a tree. It's a wake up call for sure.

Update

Just got off the phone with my friend. He sounds in good spirits. Expects to recover completely and be in fine shape for deer season this year Smile

Turns out the sled isn't even that badly damaged. Mainly the bumper on the front and the handlebars.

I asked him if he wanted me to go up there and cut down the offending tree so it wouldn't get in his way again. "We may have to go on an expedition for that," was his reply Smile

He doesn't want any visitors. Says it's hectic enough around there as it is.

Certainly a VERY Good justification for a satellite phone or some other remote/backcountry area communication method. There was some good discussion in the following thread about multiple options, including 'Garmin Inreach', which is a non satellite phone solution.

I’m glad things are improving as well.
Just a point of correction, the InReach IS a satellite communication device and it is not a phone.
I have used one all over the world and highly recommend them.
