Make America Great Again |
I get frequent requests from Microsoft to update my Win10 laptop to Win11, and I do NOT want Win11. Win10 works fine, and I accept the occasional security updates. Full version updates are not acceptable, and I get tired of cancelling them! Is there any way to put a stop to it? Thanks in advance! _____________________________ Bill R. North Alabama

Don't know the answer to your question, but you're aware that support for WIN10 is going away a year from now (October 14, 2025)? I do sympathize with you. Windows 11 is every bit as bad as they say it is.

My pc is old enough to not support Win 11. Set the controls for the heart of the Sun.

I just click the stay on Windows 10 button when it comes up. It's annoying but not annoying enough for me to look into it more. Just from a quick search it appears you can edit the registry or group policy to "stop" the update. "We've done four already, but now we're steady..."

This is where I am at as well; I'm not totally sure if that's a good or a bad thing. _______________________________________________________________________ Don't Ask The Tyrants Why They Commit Tyranny, Ask The Slaves Why They Kneel

try this - Press the Windows key + I to open the Settings app. - Click on "Update & Security." - Click on "Windows Update" in the left pane. - Click on "Advanced options." - Under "Choose when updates are installed," select "Semi-Annual Channel" or "Extended Security Updates." - Turn off the toggle switch for "Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows." This should stop the Windows 11 update notifications from appearing on your computer. I hope. Not minority enough!

An older computer purchased in 2012 came with Windows 7 Home Premium. I kept getting notifications to upgrade to the then-new Windows 10, which were ignored. Then one day it was forcibly updated to 10. The point is that you may be able to turn off the "friendly reminders," but you may not be able to stop the upgrade itself.

Really? I don't see that at all. Once you reset the start button from the (dumb) center back over to the bottom left where it belongs and get used to the start menu (I have it mimic Win10 tiles with all my programs as a launcher) it's really all not that much different than Win10. They initially took away the taskbar labels which I like and then put it back. Default is to not show them which makes using the taskbar more difficult IMO but all you have to do is: Right-click on the taskbar Go to Taskbar Settings Go to Taskbar behaviors Taskbar alignment: Left Combine taskbar buttons and hide labels: Never Combine taskbar buttons and hide labels on other taskbars: Never

Agreed with PASig, I don't mind W11 overall. We've almost completely eradicated W7 from our work environment, except 1 machine that cannot run it's instrument on anything newer, so network access is disabled on that one. We've been migrating to W11 as W10 machines are cycled in for upgrade. The Enemy's gate is down.

Windows 11 was on my laptop when purchased new in early 2021. Runs great on this machine. ____________________________ NRA Life Member, Annual Member GOA, MGO Annual Member

I'm sure some people like 11, great for them. I wanted to like it, but it didn't take long before it was incredibly annoying. Just constant small things. I went through the system with most of the prescribed hacks, but I still miss 10.

I bought a new laptop just recently to augment (not replace) my old Win 7 machine. It came with Win 11 preinstalled on it. I futzed around with it for a couple of days and then decided "F*** this", wiped the drive and installed Linux on it. No regrets at all.

Yeah, I know, but I will stick with it anyway for as long as it still works. I truly hate shitty "upgrades", especially when they are forced upon you!
I do not have the first option highlighted above. I do have the second one which is already toggled off... The closest thing to choosing when updates are installed is an option for pausing updates for up to 35 days, and that's it.
Thanks! I just downloaded and activated it, so will see what happens next... _____________________________ Bill R. North Alabama

I have not yet begun to procrastinate |
I downloaded a “trial” version of Win 11. Decided that after a couple of weeks that I hated it even more than Win 10…(which I didn’t think was possible). Well, by that time my “trial” was over and I can’t delete it and go back. Now I’m stuck with this POS!! -------- After the game, the King and the pawn go into the same box.

If you have Win 10 Pro, you can edit your group policy to prevent any updates. From the start menu, run gpedit.msc Go to: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update Disable automatic updates, and Windows will never update again. Up have to do it manually. Demand not that events should happen as you wish; but wish them to happen as they do happen, and you will go on well. -Epictetus

I recently bought a Dell refurb desktop from a company to replace my dying Gateway of ancient age. Hex core I7 processor, descent SSD, and 32 GB of memory. Came with Win 11 preloaded. Now I have never seen a naked install of Win 11, but I don't have any issues with this install. I can't say if they did or didn't tweak the settings, but so far, I like it. That will definitely prevent Win 11 update notifications!
