MuddflapFew cases of those, and a couple gallons of 1/2” paint, and even my welds look good.

ArtieSJust make the "roll of quarters" with silicone caulk after you're done welding and grinding.

When I got my MIG welder, all my welds looked like this no matter what I did. Several hours of fail, and I was ready to throw out that new welder. Then I realized I'd forgotten to turn on the gas. The welds might have improved 10% after that....

08 CayenneWhen I went to welding school no grinders were allowed. 16" half round bastard was used to prep for welds and testing. You learn how to use a cutting torch and improve your welding very quickly.

I'm fairly decent with a MIG but it went to poop one day. Total splatter. Took a while to figure out you do not have a big industrial fan blowing on you when you are welding. Blows your shielding gas away!

I can TIG steel and stainless reasonably well, but loominum kicks my ass.
I think the problem is that I can't see that microsecond between "solid" and "well, shit".

Couple of pointers for welding alum. Your tungsten needs to prepped to a ball and not a point like other metals use and go to a argon/helium mix instead of straight argon.

The ball I knew about, it always does that on AC anyway.
The helium mix is news. I only keep straight argon on hand as it will work with both my MIG and TIG rigs.
EDIT: Saaaayyy...do you suppose that's why they used to call it "heliarc" welding? Doh...

RogueJSKHey, I resemble that.
I was taught (quickly) to weld (poorly) while working on a cattle ranch a couple decades ago.
It didn't have to be pretty (and boy, it sure wasn't), it just had to work.

casThere's the meme about using a grinder to make your welds look nice makers you a grinder, not a welder. A lot of people make ugly welds, then grind them nice. That's what I do, but skip the grinding and nice part.

Last week I took a zig-zaging tail pipe, cut it a couple places freehand, then welded it back together straight. The first time ever welding something so thin, I was impressed how well I did.
Oh it's ugly, but you can't see it under the car.
My way of thinking is, those big ugly welds are probably ten times stronger than the rest of the pipe and will no doubt out last the rest of it.

Not true ! I use a sharp tungsten and straight argon.
helium mix only boost the thickness you can weld.

Blume9mmSeems I'm real good at burning holes with my welder.... the grinder doesn't help a lot with that.
