Assumptions: 1. Two or less of your long guns are ARs (like optics they take up more than the safe manufacturer's definition of 1 spot). The one I'm going to recommend allows 2 ARs on the door organizer so you can still use your conventional slots for 8 rifles/shotguns. 2. You're looking for RSC level of security (keep someone with tools out for about 5 min) and fire proofing. Therefore, I suggest the AMSEC BF6024. It'll hold 8 long guns (without scopes and not being an AR style) on one side and you have shelves on the other side. It's only 21" deep on the outside so it'll fit sideways through the narrowest of doors w/o taking them off hinges or removing trim. The door organizer is pretty handy too. Side by side, I've seen the following safes cut apart: The Winchester/Granite and Liberty looked like two different design teams didn't work together (one for security and one for fire protection) as there were huge gaps (really sloppy workmanship) in fire protection to install critical security items (e.g. the lock, bolts, etc). The AMSEC on the other hand looked like an integrated design team did the fire protection and security as there weren't hacked out gaps in fire protection to have the standard security items. If you think your collection will grow, consider the: If you've got a real tough spot to install a safe, you'll want to take a look at the two main modular (comes in 6 pieces and you can install in a tight space like a closet) safe companies: If you don't care about fire protection and your level of security is just keeping out children/grandchildren then Stack-on or Homak security cabinets fit the bill for much less money. It's not the route I went, but my buddy has five of them side by side with the thought being spending his money on insurance rather than 5 minutes of security. A tough spot is exactly what I have. In a down stairs closet under a stair case. Concrete floor and two foundation walls. I made a cabinet years ago starting with 2x2x1/8 angle. Filled in the top and one side with 3/16 plate. The side, bottom, and back next to concrete is 16 gauge. The door I modified a security door lock I make at work. Three separate locks that throw 2 9/16 stainless bolts each covered with 3/16 plate. The whole thing is bolted down. Here is a shot of it before I put it in the closet. _________________________ OH, Bonnie McMurray! | |||
