We're shopping. We had it through Geico at our last house. No opinion one way or another, but I've been tasked with figuring out who to go with one this one. Wife really wants me to get together with an insurance broker and I'm not necessarily opposed, but I wanted to look around and learn what I can first. State Farm is pretty highly rated from what I'm seeing, and some online picker thing recommended Farmer's for my zip code. Other than that, I want to be able to cover some of the bigger ticket items and a discount for home security and camera systems would be nice.

Who do you use?

We had a big hail storm hit our area, every house had damage, the only two that didn't get approved had State Farm, one for over 20 years.

He had to sue State Farm, they lost, cost them the roof bill $20K and his legal fees $25K and their legal costs.

Shop it, and get a couple of good independent agents to do it, not all agencies are licenses with the same carriers.

Go through a broker and let them find you the best deal. First time I did this, I save about 40% on my insurance and nearly doubled my coverage for Home, Auto, and Umbrella. Never be loyal to an insurance provider and look for new insurance at least every two years.

We're actually pretty lucky in Texas since the Texas Dept of Insurance has standarized insurance policies (HO-A, HO-B, HO-C, etc) so it's really easy to comparison shop. [Ron White] "Hey premium boy (they like it when you call them premium boy) [/Ron White], give me a quote for HO-B with water leakage/seepage adder."

Change 'em every few years, and currently using State Farm. I only get quotes from insurers who get rated well by Consumer Report and/or AM Best.

When I moved to Houston the 1st time I tried the insurance broker at the real estate agent's office. Miniscule savings and their AM Best credit rating was so poor that if a big hurricane hit they were more likely to file bankruptcy than pay claims. For a modest amount more I got an insurance policy from an insurer with AM Best's highest tier credit rating.

The only well rated company I won't use in Houston is Allstate. My buddy's home had grown in value, but he failed to raise the homeowner's policy to match. His home was worth 25% more than his homeowner's policy when Hurricane Ike sent a 100' tree through his house and made it a tear down. Allstate fought him tooth and nail and only paid out 90% of the policy limit. Should've been a slam dunk getting 100% of policy limit for damages at 125% of the policy limit. Word of mouth advertising goes both ways and squarely put Allstate in my "fuck 'em" category.

Not clear, who was the "they" that lost? Your neighbor, or State Farm?

Got off the phone with a broker at one of the best rated local agencies, he's going to have some quotes for me Monday. I'll have a few other brokers lined up to call for Monday morning.

Stuff like this is why I ask. I can go to a broker and get whatever they tell me the best deal is, but things like this knock State Farm and Allstate off the list for me. We had a hail storm in El Paso in '96 I think it was, the autobody and roofing businesses boomed. Hailstones the size of baseballs came down and covered the yard and the roof. If I go through something like that here, I don't want to be the only guy on the block whose carrier tells him "oh well." I know it's their job to pay you as little as possible, but still.

I use an independent agent who shops the market for me every year.

She also tells me to check with a couple highly rated companies that sell direct (not through agents); she recommended that I check Amica, for one.

This current year I wound up going with KIN, recommended by a friend who is a Home Inspector and uses them (KIN) for his own home. Direct dealing, online, policy tailored per my request, surprisingly painless transaction.

See, and I had never heard of them before I started looking at everything this afternoon. They're the top rated on the US News & World Report 2023 rankings.

I absolutely do NOT recommend USAA. I was with them for 47 years. They are not anything like what they were years and years ago. Claims are a nightmare to put it mildly.

Did a lot of researching locally and found for my area American Family was the most outstanding. Many of my neighbors also have them and claims have been quick and easy.

If you can stand the price and they are available where you live I recommend Chubb as the best from the point of view of supporting you.

I’ve been contracting with Amica for auto, homeowners and umbrella policies for over 20 years. They’ve settled any claims I’ve had quickly and theirs representatives have always been helpful and interacted with me professionally.

I had the exact opposite experience with State Farm our previous insurers.

Some people hate on State Farm but that's who I use. They're consistently the lowest cost out of the larger carriers for the level of coverage I want. All of my claims have always been handled promptly and efficiently, including both vehicle and homeowners. (Yep, even a hail claim on a roof, which quite honestly was pretty marginal but they surprisingly approved anyway.) The local rep who handles my account is fantastic. And being a large company, both their website and app are well-designed and packed with functionality.

You can find anecdotes from every insurance carrier in which someone felt they were screwed over, or had some gripe with how something was handled. If you eliminate every insurance carrier that anyone has ever complained about, you won't have anyone left from which to purchase insurance.

Understood.

However, I'm counting at least a couple dozen other instances where this phrase was used on this forum, including as far back as 2017 and as recently as a few days ago.

Is there a reason why you chose to call me out specifically? Or was that simply the straw that broke the grammatical camel's back?

Possibly, but I'm asking anyways. I suspect that in the end, I will find an option I'm happy with, until such time as I'm possibly not. Smile

Amica - No Brokers, No Agents, NO Middleman...Just Insurance!

I've had Amica for Home and Auto for over 15 years. They're direct to the consumer so No Agents, and therefore NO middleman to potentially drive up the cost. I've always received excellent customer service, whether I was adding/changing coverage or filing/processing a claim. I recommend them highly and suggest getting a quote... Wink

I posted the following in a thread on a similar subject back in November 2022:

quote:
I'm not sure if Amica is your 'original' carrier, or where their quote is in relation to other quotes you've received, but if you were happy with them, have you considered their 'Dividend policy' where you get a refund/rebate on your premium at the end of the policy term. Ultimately you do pay a lower premium, though the initial premium is higher. Amica claims the dividend is on average 5-20% of the policy premium. Full disclosure - I do NOT have the Dividend Policy and thus far chosen to pay less on the initial premium, so I've got no actual experience to convey on the dividend or that type of policy, but it may be right for you and a way to save money AND get good service!

https://www.amica.com/en/products/dividend.html

I have Amica currently, and I've been VERY pleased with their service. I like the fact that they don't have agents, which I've never felt added anything to the equation other than the cost of having a 'middleman' between the insured and the insurer. I've always gotten outstanding and prompt customer service from Amica, whether it's to make policy changes (adding vehicles, adding a 'new' driver, contemplating changes in coverage, etc) or processing claims. It's ALWAYS been painless, and a pleasure to deal with them. I'm also fortunate to have one of their regional offices 10 miles from my home, and on one occasion visited there to get some questions answered I felt 'might' be better addressed face to face rather than on the phone. They've been my insurer for both Auto & Home for the past 15 years and admittedly, I have seen their rates rise over time as well, though I don't think that's unique to Amica. Wink

We had Western Mutual [IIRC] on our last 2 houses.
First was a starter house. 2nd we got dropped on our close date, as they no longer covered solar panels.

Current house, we have Hippo. Only 1 year in, an lucky to have never needed to file a claim in 12 years of home ownership.
