Plowing straight ahead come what may |
I remember when I begged my mom to go to the "Tiger" gas station...she usually went to the local Hess station because gas there was .29 per gallon and the "brand name" gas was .35 per gallon...she had a thing about "three gallons for a dollar" ... She just didn't see the value of the "tiger tail" they gave away with a fill up... ******************************************************** "we've gotta roll with the punches, learn to play all of our hunches Making the best of what ever comes our way Forget that blind ambition and learn to trust your intuition Plowing straight ahead come what may And theres a cowboy in the jungle" Jimmy Buffet

Yes i do. How about "You can trust your car to the man who wears the star." From the old Texaco ads. The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. Yep, and the Gulf "No-Nox" with the pair of orange horseshoes that they would stick on the back of your car. Texaco sold a big red fire truck that was about 2 feet long and the front suspension was independent, and I remember you could lay stomach down on it a ride it like a skateboard. I remember those horseshoes ... Does anyone remember this jingle... "I've got folks to meet...in old St. Pete and all along the line... So fill up with Fire Bird... At the big...blue...Pure Oil sign" If I remember correctly it showed a family in a blue Ford station wagon leaving a Pure Oil station...for some reason I associate the commercial and jingle with 'Walt Disney's Wonderful World Of Color' on Sunday Nights. ******************************************************** "we've gotta roll with the punches, learn to play all of our hunches Making the best of what ever comes our way Forget that blind ambition and learn to trust your intuition Plowing straight ahead come what may And theres a cowboy in the jungle" Jimmy Buffet

Legalize the Constitution |
Standard gas stations sold Red Crown regular gas and Gold Crown premium, with crowns on the gas pumps. They gave away “Red Crown” valve stem caps. They would give us kids the caps for our bicycles. _______________________________________________________ despite them

Yep and the old Mobile Sign. The Horse with wings or something like that. I had a 1980 Harley that needed leaded fuel. Gulf and Union 76 were the last ones to remove lead additive. Heck Union 76 had a buy of older cars for $500 just to buy smog credits before they removed the lead. Then Hancock gasoline had dial your octane at the pump. Anywhere from 95 to 105 octane. You could watch the volume wheels spin for 95 and 105 octane. Beware the man who only has one gun. He probably knows how to use it! - John Steinbeck

It's not easy being me |
My Dad took his car to the local Gulf station for everything. Tires, maintenance, gas, you name it. They gave him a pair of the orange horseshoes that he gave to me. Mom took the station wagon to the Shell station for the sole purpose of purchasing a set of steak knives a a reduced price with a fill-up. Sometime in the late 60's. Those steak knives were still around when we cleaned out Dad's house after he died about 7 years ago (Mom had died 5 years earlier). _______________________________________ Flammable, Inflammable, or Nonflammable....... I had the same truck - all the cousins in the family got one. Mom tossed it sometime in the 80's (I think it was a Christmas present in 1959). I saw one a couple of years ago in an fleatique store for $400 (!) Came across a Tiger tail just the other day in a box of Christmas decorations. In the 1964 Worlds' Fair the Sinclair exhibit had vacuum forming equipment with large clear plexiglass domes so the molding process was visible, where for a quarter you could mold the dinosaur of your choice. I had the green brontosaurus (now apatosaurus) for years. Haven't thought of that stuff for years. I think I recall that Hess put out a little green plastic tanker truck one time back in the 70's, and that the lights worked (maybe the horn, it's been a few weeks). I begged what I believed to be a sufficient amount to get one for Christmas that year, but alas, never did get one. I'da been the coolest kid, too. ________________________________________________ "You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. My recollection is that it was Mobil. https://aoghs.org/petroleum-ar...gh-flying-trademark/ Dallas has a big flying red horse sign downtown. https://thedallaswhisperer.wor...ag/flying-red-horse/ FWIW, today I saw some stations selling regular unleaded (87 octane) for $1.999/gallon. A lot of others were at $2.099/gal. Lowest price I've seen in a long time. flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth

Driving through rural New Jersey I remember telling a gas station attendant "Fill it up with ethyl" and when I got back from the john, there were six of the ugliest broads I'd ever seen in my car. Standard Oil Company of New York became Mobil Oil. They had the red Pegasus logo. I know a Mobil retiree that says Mobil ended up with the Standard Oil archives and she said she has seen some cool, old stuff. Now part of XOM. Standard Oil Company of New Jersey became Exxon / Esso. Now part of XOM. Standard Oil of California renamed Chevron. Still CVX. Standard Oil of Indiana renamed Amoco. Now part of BP. Standard Atlantic renamed Atlantic Richfield Company (aka ARCO). Now part of Tesoro and Sunoco. The Standard Oil Company (Sohio). Now part of BP. The Ohio Oil Co became Marathon Petroleum.
