The keypad that operates the gate to my house has quit operating. The unit is composed of a circuit board, mated to a keypad, and connected to the gate control box. All operating on 12 volt deep cycle battery charged by a solar panel.

There is 12 volt power entering the circuit board so there is no problem feeding power through from the control box. When I turn power on and off to the circuit board, the speaker on the board beeps. The keypad, however has no effect on anything; doesn't work, and no "beep" when I push the buttons.

Replacing the entire unit is $200.00, and I will just replace a broken component if I can identify which piece (board or keypad) failed.

Lightning was involved, but nothing is obviously scorched. I have a multimeter, but not much by way of electrical board experience, other than continuity, voltage and amperage testing.

Are there any simple tests (other than pushing the buttons) I can perform on this unit to tell which of the two components has failed?

Pull the board up, look under the bottom for corrosion bridging between solder joints.
If you see any, I use a light wire brush to clean it away.

I'd wanna test that relay on the right too.

Mark123 should be able to help too.

yeah, one of the ICs are probably shot.

This ^^^^^, for both keypad and that circuit board. The visible circuit board obviously has at least two ICs on it.

Personally, for $200 I'd just replace the whole thing and be done with it, and I have extensive experience working with such electronics.

1) Any components on the Keypad board?
2) It beeps on power up so that might be OK.
3) Trace the keypad inputs and see which IC \ components they connect to.
4) Inspect the traces and components for damage.
5) Test any components inline from the KeyPad.
6) Replace the IC the Keypad Traces connect to.

Good Luck Mitch

That's surface mount. It's not exactly easy to work with.

I get beeps when I mess with the power input. There are no visible components on the circuit board for the keypad.

I'll probably end up just replacing both components.

I really do appreciate all the help and suggestions.
