July 10 1964 I enlisted in Uncle Sam's Army. Seems like just 636 months ago! I retired after 21 years, not wanting to make a career out of it. If you're goin' through hell, keep on going. Don't slow down. If you're scared don't show it. You might get out before the devil even knows you're there. NRA ENDOWMENT LIFE MEMBER

Too old to run, too mean to quit! |
I did 11 years active, observing the E/W German border while the ones on the other side were watching us. I got out in 1966 when the politics got so shitty that those of us who thought of ourselves as career soldiers could not stand it any longer. You know, like when company commanders and battalion commanders were covering for criminal conduct by members of their command. They just transferred "problem children" out of the command instead of dealing with it. All in the name of protecting the unit reputation. Elk There has never been an occasion where a people gave up their weapons in the interest of peace that didn't end in their massacre. (Louis L'Amour) "To compel a man to furnish contributions of money for the propagation of opinions which he disbelieves and abhors, is sinful and tyrannical. " -Thomas Jefferson "America is great because she is good. If America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great." Alexis de Tocqueville FBHO!!! The Idaho Elk Hunter

Agree 100%. By the time I retired, it was really bad. I retired as I was on the way to the Sergeant Majors Academy. If you're goin' through hell, keep on going. Don't slow down. If you're scared don't show it. You might get out before the devil even knows you're there. NRA ENDOWMENT LIFE MEMBER

You got in before I did and got out after me. I put in 6 years and 1 day. When the total years from my enlistment was 20 years, I thought, "Wow, I could have retired by now even if I just did reserves." The 20 years did seem to go by fast. But I'm over that now. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

Give him our best wishes. It is certainly interesting times for those in the military, especially given a President with a positive outlook for the military. As someone said, a professional does a good job even when he/she doesn’t feel like it. Fortunately the US armed forces have enjoyed an unbroken line of some people willing to do good jobs when they didn’t feel like it dating back to the beginning. Thank you for helping continue that tradition and giving the newer professionals the benefit of the experience and wisdom you gained by sticking with it until retirement even though you didn’t always feel like it. ► 6.4/93.6 ___________ “We are Americans …. Was commissioned a USAF 2LT on 2 Feb 1960 and 19 days later was signing in at Mt. Hebo AFS, Oregon. Just over 20 years later I retired as a Captain on Ramstein AB, Germany and spent a few months just traveling. Upon return to the States I spent a few months with my folks in Arkansas then looked for work and a place of my own. Ended up in Dallas, Texas working for Texas Instruments Incorporated as a COBOL computer programmer, a job I performed for 26 years. I've been completely retired now for 10+ years and having a great time. My thanks for all the military, LEO, Fire, and EMT persons on this board--especially any who were actually shot at. (I never was.) And for those who are already retired--enjoy it! flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth
