Due to pending retirement, we are losing our current umbrella policy and we will need to purchase new coverage. Unfortunately, It is not going to work out with home and auto carrier.

Any ideas? Whom do you use?

Farmers. Home, auto, umbrella. Less cost with all three with the same carrier.

Same here, just with State Farm. It's like $13/month to add the $1M umbrella to my existing policies.

It's usually significantly cheaper to bundle it with your existing carrier. Why is it "not going to work out" with yours?

I'm a motorcycle rider so it really limits the number of insurance companies available. I want the umbrella to cover the motorcycle so I go with the bundle from the same insurance company.

I've had home, auto, motorcycle, and umbrella bundled together with both Amica and State Farm.

I used to buy an umbrella policy, and if I recall correctly, it may have been when my children were driving during their teenage years and still under my roof. I'm guessing it's still probably a good idea to do it, as long as the terms are good enough for a payout in case you caused harm in some kind of auto accident that was your own fault. Depending on the plaintiff and the amount of assets of the defendant, a payout like that might be good enough for them to settle. I'm assuming this is the typical use and need for an umbrella policy.

I remember calling them one time to see if I could increase it beyond 1 million, and they very curious, asking me questions about my exposure, but I didn't have anything to tell them except I was nervous as hell with two teenagers under my roof driving cars. That was a pretty short conversation and funny looking back.

What exactly will an umbrella policy cover, and not cover, for the regular average household these days ?

I go through whoever happens to be my broker. It doesn’t matter to me if auto, home, and umbrella aren’t with the same company.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." State Farm won’t do UM/UIM with an umbrella policy. You want both of them plus liability. PersonalUmbrella.com is a good option as is Allstate. You’ll need an agent for both.

get your broker to get you options. this is a robust market with lots of options. Your choice of carrier (within limits) doesn't matter very much. The key issue will be what underlying limits you need.
