Looking for a running board that stays clean of snow and dirt. Would like them to sit below cab to assist wife getting in and out.

I have a 2018 Ford F-150 Platinum with retractable running boards. Even retracted, they pick up stuff from the road. I just went over a wet, muddy road and they were a mess. The nice thing - i guess - is that I can extend them manually, from the dash menu, and wash then via a car wash. As an add-on, they are not cheap.

The boards on my 2019 Honda Passport are fixed and seem to pick up less crap off of the roads. Both rigs have mud flaps.

Year/Make/Model may be helpful

My 2016 F150 had the OE Sport running boards & never had any issue with debris or traction on them.

I've had both, fixed on a 2007 Escalade Ext, and retractable on a 2020 Lincoln Navigator L.

They both get dirty and they both do the job for shorter passengers.

As noted by others, fixed is much cheaper.

Had a friend in Boise ID with a Yukon XL that had retractable boards. Not a great option if you get a lot of snow. They got jammed up when the snow was fairly heavily packs & froze overnight.

I had a local welding shop make some of square tubing with mesh instead of solid step areas.

New body or the LD?

If it's not the LD, we finally came out with a good looking, reasonably priced step. Would be covered under the factory warranty too

You must mean something other than what you wrote.

I've had fixed boards on three SUVs and wouldn't want anything else. Also look at how wide they are - if they are too narrow they are actually more dangerous than none when wet. Step on an edge and slip off when you least expect it.

I think the fixed running boards on my trucks kept clean by themselves.

I would also recommend the extended versions that allow you to step up and reach in the bed of the truck.

This is a recent option I wish I knew about form my current truck (Chevy)

The key to clean running boards is big honking mud flaps behind the front tires.

In my experience, the main function of running boards is transfer mud from the road to your pants.

There are a few out there that are level with the cab.
