If anyone works in or has detailed knowledge of the UK prison system, or can refer me to any literature concerning this subject, please let me know. I have some questions, which no doubt will lead to more questions.....I've studied the US system pretty extensively and worked in it for decades. I'm looking to expand my knowledge base, perhaps with and eye towards doing a bit of writing.

Thanks!

I am ignorant but have read articles by Theodore Dalrymple here and there....

You might find “Inside” by John Hoskison helpful. He was a professional golfer in the UK who ended up in prison for a fatal DUI. As I recall, he was in two UK prisons and he discusses life in both. It has been a while since I read the book so it may or may not be directly on point for what you want. May I ask what this is for?

Edited to add that reading the BBC UK section and searching their site will give you some good information too.

Thanks. I'll get the book, and it's for several reasons. I retired from the US Bureau of Prisons, and for several years taught Corrections in the Admin of Justice program in the Ca community college system. I've studied US prisons and history for quite a while, and did some research on the history of San Quentin, for example. My wife and I are reading British mysteries, one writer in particular, and she's going on about a series of fictional crimes originating in UK prisons. Additionally, we've heard several references to Brit prisons in our Netflix watching, and I want to sort out factual from fictional. Nearly all published works in the US about US prisons is total crap, even the reality tv stuff only shows the worst 2 or 3 percent of prisons and life inside. It's pretty easy in the states, the Bureau of Prisons and a number of state systems list policies on their websites such as "Inmate Personal Property" and "Inmate Discipline and Special Housing Units." Just looking to expand my knowledge base, and since the wife and I had somewhat parallel careers in the prisons, we're considering doing some fiction ourselves that may be a bit more realistic.
