Yeah, 8 seconds faster in un-ideal conditions.
On a clear dry day, could top an already insane lap time.

Impressive result. Could've made the car SOUND better, though. Sounds like my Ryobi weed whacker on Fentanyl...

That's amazing.

The driver would be absolutely exhausted from the exertion and concentration.

Crazy.

I was surprised to hear the shifts sounding relatively slow compared to either Ferrari or Porsche. With all the F1 experience MB has I was expecting lightning quick shifts…

OK Porsche, your move!

Thought the last record was also set on a damp track… No?

Well, it's effectively a road-legal F1 drivetrain. Does sound a bit rough/coarse I'll agree.

I though the same, seemed to shift slowly in the early part of the lap, seemed more normal at the end.

Amazing. To my untrained eye it looked like it never even got loose, even on a damp track. If that's so, it would seem to indicate there could be even more time shaved.

^ Definitely.
Sounds like it bottomed out a few times, if that's the scraping sounds heard a few times. Sounds similar to the plank on an F1 car when it scrapes at very high speed.

He drifted slightly onto the edge of the track in at least three spots, could have come out faster on two curves. Drop those tiny mistakes, on a dry track I think you might see < 6:25.

They need to get Hammond to drive it.

3 questions about this:

How big are the balls on that driver to go that fast?

How big of a smile do you think he had when he finished?

And what kind of brake system do those cars use? I can’t imagine how they don’t get brake fade after the first few turns at that speed.

I’m not much of a car guy but that video was awesome.

They use carbon ceramic disc brakes that have very little fade as long as they’re at operating temperature.

Plus regenerative braking for the hybrid system.
Not sure if the One has both the MGU-K and MGU-H from the F1 powertrain.

A damp track is actually perfect conditions. A wet slippery track is obviously bad but if there is some dampness it helps keep the tires at the optimal temperature range instead of getting too hot and “greasy”.

I remember watching a road race and there was a few puddles on the track and the cars were coming out of the racing line to go through the water. The announcer explained the reason.

That driver has balls of steel considering the lack of a roll cage at those speeds. Seems like a great way to get killed.

The braking of electric motors is pretty amazing. They are so effective that brakes on a passenger vehicle can actually be good for the life of the car. Some electric cars actually have settings to how much regeneration they use. Most people start out with minimum amounts and after getting used to it they keep kicking the percentage up and up. So much that some people can actually get by just using the gas peddle.

IIRC, the Porsche that held the lap record, also smashed the previous best by a significant margin; then to have this car beat that by 8 seconds! Remarkable

RE: Bolded bit
I'd guess the CF monocoque is nearly as strong as a normal car with a cage.
It's effectively an enclosed 2 seat F1 car for the road.

Wrong record. The Porsche 919 Hybrid has the overall lap record at 5:19:55 is the fastest any car has gone around the Nurburgring Nordschleife. This is the fastest a road legal production car has ever driven the Nurburgring.
