Nope. They don't need to "collect" more info about me than the Navy has. Basically, nunya. I know who is who in my family. Beyond that I don't need to "connect" with some long-lost cousin. They would probably just hit me up for money.

So you have no experience of any of the services they offer then? You just popped in to throw a 'fuck that' into the thread.

Nope. I do not want to give them money to turn around and sell my information. I do not care who my ancestors are. I do not care if they can tell me that I am more likely to die of something. Why anyone would submit to this baffles me. Just like having Alexa in you house, why?
And you asked if anyone does the ancestry thing. Figured you might want some no's with your yes's. Or maybe this is just me popping in to throw a 'fuck that' into the thread.

It sure is. I didn't ask anybody whether I (or anyone else) should do it, I asked if anyone had tried it. It's quite simple, I don't GAS if people don't want to do it, I want to hear from people who've tried it. The clue is in the thread title.

No. Simply based upon the fact companies like Ancestry have revealed it is fighting the U.S. government over an order to hand over DNA data. This is only the second-known case in which the leading family history company has been served with a warrant demanding genetic information on its users. Also, companies like ancestry can conduct research on your genetic data, sell it, or share it with third parties & the HIPAA privacy laws that protect patients in a medical setting don’t apply to companies that do direct-to-consumer genetic testing so insurance companies can find you have a predisposition to develop early onset Alzheimer's, cancer, mental illness, or substance use disorder, and discriminate against you based on that. I’m not leaving my DNA anywhere useless..

Maybe your title should've been "IF you've done ancestry/dna testing - please give me some input"

Might cut down on the "fuck that" posts...

Nice idea but, no it wouldn't. Just look at the post above yours.

Absolutely no useful input, just another 'fuck that noise, government this, privacy that....blah blah blah'

People just can't help themselves, they have to take a shit in any thread they can find that fits their prejudices. Time wasters, all of them.

Yeah, probably true.

I have no useful input, but wanted to say thank you for asking the question.

In reading the responses I learned that ancestry had non-dna services that could be useful and that there were also other sites where one could educate themselves by reading records without giving up DNA if that is something one is worried about.

Good luck with your quest!

I did the online search route years ago and found lots of info on the paternal side of the family and the wife's family. Looked hard for stuff on the maternal side of the family and nothing (maternal grandfather was an engineer at Oak Ridge so that may explain the dearth of info somewhat). Got tired of finding nothing and paying for it.

rduckwor, ancestry is adding files all the time. Some states have been very slow in digitizing their records, so that may have been an issue with your maternal grandfather. I have both ancestry and MyHeritage (both have records) and I'd be happy to try to find data for you. Send me an e-mail with your grandfather's name and birth information (if you have it--at least location and approximate year will help). I'll see what I can find.

Did Ancestry last year. Found out a have a half-sister that my Dad fathered right before he met my mother. My half-sister's mother was whisked away and her parents made her give up the baby for adoption. My parents havent been receptive but I was able to connect with the mother and she was open to reconnecting with her daughter.

I love it when threads have 'rules' concerning who does and who does not have permission to post in them... Roll Eyes

Seriously, somebody who may not meet your 'approved criteria' (like maybe someone with an opposing and/or contrary viewpoint?) might actually have something valid to contribute that could shed some serious concerns on the subject that you may have never even considered. In fact, it could even provide sufficient pause such that you might conclude, 'well if that's the case then no friggin' way would I want to even consider doing that'!

But, rules are rules, so NO objectionable views allowed!

I’ve gotten a lot out of Ancestry.com and their DNA services. It’s helped me build quite a tree and fill in all the missing gaps on our tree. It’s fun tracking down the mysteries and seeing how much information is out there on your ancestors. I’m happy to help if you need any assistance. Good luck with your research.

They're not rules, I have no power to prevent people from posting anything anywhere. However, why waste time and effort posting something completely anti the OP's question or request if you know the OP is simply going to scroll past that nonsense?

I have done some research and sent you an e-mail with what I've found. It is not all there is out there, but it may do for now.

Pyker, I'm also fairly adept at researching the web and will help if you need it. (I've just done some work for rduckwor.)
