Add Toyota to the list, Subaru won't send them TRE vehicles any more.

If there are 20 people on the problem, then the diff is a faulty design. No amount of parts replacement will fix that.

What was interesting is that a Chevrolet Colorado Trail Boss, roughly the same trim level as the Toyota, was able to navigate the same trail without breaking. I imagine we'll see a recall fairly soon.

True but the rest of the story is the guy that bought the blue 2024 tacoma traded in a problem child 2023 Chevrolet Colorado he also bought new.

There is one notable difference here. Toyota has a team of Engineers working to identify the exact cause for this failure and how to correct the design. Meanwhile Ford would be stating it was customer abuse and the customer really shouldn't take that model off roading.

I had a 2013 Toyota Tacoma V6 TRD Sport that cost me more in maintenance than a 2012 BMW Dinan 550i! Toyota had a known problem over a few years with the AC condenser units but refused to take any corrective action to remedy the problem except for a quiet redesign on forward models. Over the course of ownership, I had to replaced the entire AC unit three times and Toyota response was pound sand every times. The first time, Toyota claimed the condenser unit was swamped off-roading and refused to repair under warranty. This was a lie as the truck had never been off road and was purchased new. The final change we went with an aftermarket supplier which lasted longer than all the other units combined. Each time the cost was in the +/- 3k dollar range. At least when I bought the BMW I expected a luxury high performance German car’s true cost was the ability to afford service and maintenance. I highly doubt I will ever buy a Toyota product again mostly due to the way we were treaded by Toyota. IME, their reputation exceeds their reality.

I'm a big Toyota fan but I would never buy a first year of anything. I hear they may also have oil starvation issues with the new V6 turbo in the Tundra.

Toyota has a history of not making things right. I inherited a 2003 Tundra from my dad when he became incapable of safe driving. American made Tundras and Tacomas had several years where inferior steel resulted in millions of rotten frames being ignored or covered (up) with undercoating. I’ll have to spend a couple of thousand dollars to make my Tundra safe for more than a few years. Toyota told me that the truck was in for the recall where no rust was discovered. I do not believe for a second that there was no rust when the technicians sprayed the frame. Here are a couple of pics- there is zero rust anywhere else on the frame. The truck only has 74K actual miles on the meter. But this is “normal” wear and tear…

This thread is eye opening, and a downer. I've been daydreaming about a newer vehicle and the Tacoma was the one I thought about most often.

The 4Runner still interests me a lot, are they having similar issues?

The 4Runner is ancient by comparison, and are still built in Japan.
IIRC, the current 4Runner came out in 2009, with the same drivetrain from the 2003 V6, so over 20 years old if you bought a new one today.

As far as Toyota making things right? From what I understand the frames were manufactured by Dana. And Toyota stood behind the bad steel for many years beyond the warranty period, actually paying to replace entire frames and buying trucks back for over NADA retail value. IMO they went above and beyond what any manufacture has ever done.

They wouldn't fix my tailgate even though it just wouldn't open on a regular basis. They were horrible to deal with. I traded it in on another car and I doubt I would ever buy another Toyota. My wife's Highlander has been a rock star. Toyota has a great reputation but they aren't perfect by any means.

Perhaps for where they could not avoid it; my frame could MAYBE passed off as an error at recall. I don’t buy it if the inspection was thorough, but perhaps a mistake.

My brother had a 2004 whose frame was absolutely riddled with through and through holes I cannot believe for a second all that rust suddenly erupted from UNDER the coating. The frames I have seen images of that were just as rotten tells me Toyota did not go above and beyond.

IIRC, the initial frame rust recall was for 3 years of Tacoma. They paid customers 1.5 times their trucks book value which, many were pleased to get. I never heard a word about Tundra frames.

Seems Toyota will blame it on a 3rd party parts supplier of unknown specifications in 3... 2...

Where did you read that? He didn't say that in the video (unless I fell asleep). He was having electrical/computer issues. And like the Tacoma, it's a first year model. So mechanical vs. computer, they both suck.

Not even close. The yellow truck is his personal vehicle. The Taco is something the channel bought. The Chevy has been far from perfect, I've been following it close as I want to replace my (last generation) Colorado next year. All new vehicles seem to suck.

The shit broke because they don't have a solid front axle. Every truck with IFS that I've been off roading with breaks stearing linkage, axles, sway bars, etc. give me an 80 series anyday.
