Good flat black coating for stainless steel exhaust tip?? Login/Join

Looking to pull the unsightly rear resonator from the Expedition.
The exhaust tip I need to complete the project is 3” inlet 4” out let angled tip 12” long which is not the issue.
I don’t like shiny. I want a flat black finish.
All I am finding are powder coated and all the reviews say it peels in under 6 months. Even from top quality manufactures like aFe.
MBRP and Magnaflow I can’t find reviews of peeling.
But the MBRP has their logo embossed huge on the side. The magnaflow does not but runs about $110.
I can get a plain old stainless tip for like $30. There has got to be some coating that will hold up to the heat.
Line X??????
Any other thoughts?

Prep the surface with a super fine sanding sponge, clean and spray with a metal etching primer then coat with a high heat bbq flat black, if it chips, remove and reapply

If everything works in the fashion I am hoping it will all be welded in place. So removal is not a route I am looking to go.

Not sure why I did not think of cerakote. Guess I never really thought about I in a high heat environment.

I know most of those tips are Chinese. Probably one manufacturer making them for everyone. I'd just buy something cheap and as was mentioned above, cerakote it.
My wife bought me a stainless MBRP tip a few years and it was Chinese crap

Magnaflow is made in the US.
Thermal Research is made in the US as well.
I’ll see how much it will cost for Cerakote. I may splurge for one of those.
Magnaflow is $40 but only single walled.
https://www.partshopper.com/it...ss-tip-4in-diameter/

Thermal is $82 but double walled for the 12”. Or $63 for the 8”.
https://thermalrd.com/collecti...long-x-3-inlet-angle

I like the double walled look of the thermal a lot better.

Not saying for sure but you may find the entire Magnaflow is US made with the tip Chinese. If it doesn't matter to you go for it.

Interested to see (and hear) results of what you do to yours. Please post an update (or email in my profile), I’ve also considered the XP’s low exhaust a bit unsightly.

In that case have a local shop powder coat it, way more durable, the heat at the tip should be negligible considering the distance from the engine, they can leave a small bit of the end uncoated so it can be welded to the exhaust

Sand / rough up the surface.

Most auto parts stores sell brake caliper paint. I used that paint on my calipers and drums when I bought the truck 8 years ago, and it's still on them.

Fortunately it has already been done with success so I can’t take credit.

There is a sound clip on one of the pages with the resonator removed. Adds a little throat on startup and idle but does not seem to make a huge difference in overall sound which is good. As I have not heard an exhaust that actually sounds good on these.
That low hanging resonator is not only unsightly a little concerning if I do take it off road.
Glad the guy in the link figured it out as I am just going to do the same except I think he cut the tip off the resonator and reused it.
I would have taken the time to figure out the best way to remove it eventually.

Thanks for the TIP!!!
It appears they only have oblong in 3”. But it may not look to bad.
At $75 not too bad as the reviews say the finish has held up for two years so far.
