rburgA repeat or recurring thread - the house next door
Many of us have a dump next to us, with nothing we can do about it. I've only lived in this house 10 years, and on this lot for 25. This entire time I've put up with the dump next door. The city does nothing, year in and year out. When the "flipper" bought it in 2005, I thought there might be hope. But she bought it cheap and then managed to sell it high. Worse than just let it continue to be run down, The now new owner has done nothing. She's of Iranian decent, and I refer to her as the Iranian terrorist.
My neighbor on the other side of the dump really hates the owner. I guess we should lighten up, at least she's paying someone to cut the grass. Its a big improvement over prior years. The latest development was they had the power lines cut. They now hang down. Its had a for sale sign in the yard this summer, but the owner paid way too much and its been running down since she bought it in 2005. Houses don't improve with neglect. The paint is now pealing, another code violation. But those are forgotten with time. The list she had back in 2005 seems to be no where to be found these days. Self healing I guess.
Its all on the city, which does nothing. Once in a while when a home gets so bad that its in danger of falling into a roadway, they tear it down. This one is back off the road far enough it won't happen. With the power cut off, the electric company won't reconnect it until the city issues a certificate of habitability. They won't do that until it passes code. It will need new paint first. Already priced $50,000 over fair value, no one in their right mind will pay to paint it.
I don't really expect to live all that much longer. But it'll be there, pealing paint and utilities cut off until my dying day. My wife says I'm not allowed to shoot the owner. I just don't understand why not.

BurtonRWIt would be a real shame if the structure spontaneously caught fire one night. Might inconvenience you for a few days.

I predict that there will be many suggestions and statements about the law made here, and some of them will be spectacularly wrong. - jhe888

Fla. JimI assume the burning is said in jest.You want to be the cause of a FF injury or death? We do search all burning buildings for possible vagrants and such. Saying burn a bld is almost as bad as say, just go and shoot the owner. Actions have consequences.

jimmy123xPerhaps she's hoping that you'd buy it because you're sick and tired of looking at it. LOL.... I'd walk into your cities code enforcement office, make really friendly with the person behind the desk, bring pictures of it, and ask them if there is anything they can do about it. It's surprising how much motivation a code enforcement officer can have if they're pursueing something.

Skins2881The house next door. Most of that trash you see is actually on my property. He's promised a number of times to clear it but hasn't.

shovelheadRodents? Raccoons? Notify the health department. They usually take a dim view of them.

220-9erA few ideas;
Keep the heat on the city officials and see if the neighbor on the other side will also. You need to be more persistent and willing to go up the food chain to make things happen.
Check to see if the property taxes are being paid. Many jurisdictions will let that go for a while out of laziness. Put some heat on them if they aren't paid to foreclose and maybe someone will buy it and clear the lot for resale. Or you and/or your neighbor could buy it.
See if you can have the junk on your property hauled off or put back onto the property where it belongs.

Neighbor:

parabellum "On this episode of Next Door Dick- the neighbors get married- to each other..."{over-the shoulder shot of Dick sitting in a lawn chair in his yard, watching the outdoor wedding ceremony next door}
Dick:
"You're brother and sister!! The father of the bride, father of the groom, and the best man are all the SAME GUY!!!
'Up Against the Wall Redneck Mother' is not a wedding march!! You- you got a goddamn monkey for a flower girl!!"{Dick opens a can of beer and looks over at the grill on the other side of the fence and mutters mutters to himself}
"Who serves hot dogs at their wedding reception?"{swigs beer, jumps up from chair}
"Get them cars off my lawn!!!"September 08, 2020, 06:52 PM

Until this virus crap subsides, Cities won't be doing much. Its "unfair" to the poor folks who are out of work to punish them by making them do their overpaid jobs. Never mind they haven't been doing their jobs for the last 15 years. It includes the slugs before them.

rburgBack to the monkey thing. We don't have any of them, either. We had raccoons. They were living in the attic next door. In case you haven't noticed, I'm not a nice guy. When I first moved here in 1995 my back porch motion light came on. I looked out and discovered one of the evil things tearing apart my garbage bags. Never being on to put up with much, I opened the back door to yell at it. It charged. Thinking it might have just been a fluke, I tried again and it piled into my storm door as I was closing it.
Sometimes I have a sense of humor, so I headed down to the basement to look for something to go bang. Found an old revolver in 9mm, loaded it up with shot loads (yes, they make them) and went back to the kitchen. The delicacies were still served, So I opened the door again. He charged again, so I shot the no account little bastard. He wobbled away, hopefully to die a lingering and painful death. I got no humor.
They were living in the upstairs next door. Several generations of them. Well, less one. Long ago, I shot another in my backyard up on the hill. Not really my back yard, my neighbors, but he approved.
