I've experienced it directly. When we were buying an adjacent parcel to our first property out here but still living in MA, I went to the bank for a bank check to send as earnest money deposit for the purchase. The bank teller had no idea New Mexico was part of the US.

For a while I subscribed to New Mexico magazine. On the very past page of every monthly edition is a piece entitled "One of our 50 is missing" in which readers relate similar stories. Every month. Lots of poorly-educated people in our country.

Multiple times in her life she’s had people look at forms and such when it says birthplace = NM tell her. You don’t look Mexican. Or you speak such good English for a Mexican. Etc. how can the population in general be so stupid. Wait. Don’t answer that

Just to throw you for a loop, there are dozens of millions of lily white Hispanics, and a couple million are Mexicans in the bargain. People in the US tend to associate everyone south of the border as migrant caravan types, but metric buttloads of English, German, Italian, Irish and Spanish settlers went down south too...

We get the opposite here, as well. "I love visiting Richmond, seeing all the history," is the reply when I say I'm from West Virginia.

I point out that they are talking about East Virginia. Big Grin

Now that NM has elected a governor who is a democrat and both the state house and senate are controlled by the democrats, we will pretty much be a third world country at the end of the next 4 years.

About 20 years ago I was on a business trip to Atlanta. Over lunch one day, one of the guys I was working with asked where I went to school at. I told him, Idaho.

"Idaho, huh? Cool. What state is that in?"

I'll fess up.

Driving through New Mexico last month and stopped at Chili Hills New Mexican Restaurant in Moriarty.

They were offering Mexican dishes like Enchiladas, Tacos, Burritos, and fajitas. I asked for a recommendation as a first timer. Got a mexican dish sounding name which turned out to be underwhelming stuff over a non-tortilla bread. Bland as heck. I asked the waitress what it was based on, she said, "Indian." I asked, "Which kind, dot or feather?" She didn't answer.

Facebook asked me for a recommendation and I didn't recommend it saying, "Sorry, the people are nice but this isn't Mexican food." The restaurant responded to my feedback with, "It's great that the people were nice but this is a NEW Mexican restaurant."

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

There was a judge in Broward County about 10 years ago that wanted to call INS/Border Patrol on a defendant that took a plea to a felony to have him deported back to ....Puerto Rico. Awkward silence in the courtroom, then the prosecutor explained to the judge that Puerto Rico was part of the USA.
