Awesome, glad it's working out so well! I have a interview with Google tomorrow. I tried for AWS about a month ago, but was not selected. Hopefully Google will pick me. Jesse Sic Semper Tyrannis

Good luck on your interview. AWS and Google can both be difficult to get in with, but the good thing for you is that there’s plenty of other companies in that area. Another one to look into is Equinix, they seem to have some pretty good benefits and pay really well. The company I got in with is Stream, they don’t have a presence in northern VA as of yet but I believe they are building a facility there. At least it’s listed on their website right now.

Thanks, I actually don't meet prerequisites, but exceed them in other aspects, hoping someone will roll the dice on me. Didn't make it past Equinix screen out process. Fingers crossed for Google, but I got fallback options. I'm interviewing on operations/facilities side not racking side. Jesse Sic Semper Tyrannis

Yeah, I figured with your background you were on the critical facilities side of things as well. The good thing about data centers is that the demand for them will only go up. Pretty stable area of the job market. I haven’t missed a single minute of work due to the response from this “pandemic”.

Oh stewardess, I speak jive. |
So convenient that the Data Centers in Loudon County are barely an hour from NSA HQ at Ft. Meade, eh.

I pretty sure it went well. It was way easier than I expected. Basic questions about life safety stuff, UPSs, and elementary troubleshooting. Interviewer said recruiter will call in next week either way. I'm pretty sure I'll pass on to next step. Not sure if there is a longer form interview to follow or offer. From what I read I'm expecting if moved forward a longer interview. I felt really good about today's though, no questions I didn't know the answer to, it seemed almost too simple. May be this was just a screen-out interview. Jesse Sic Semper Tyrannis

Glad to hear today went well for you. I’ve heard Google had some pretty technical questions in their interviews, so I’d say it’s safe to assume that there will be another interview. If not, and that’s all there will be for it then it sounds like you did very well. Regardless, I hope it ends up with an offer. Like I said, it’s a pretty safe market to get into as far as job security goes. Good luck! Let us know what they say next.

Copy & pasted from an email I got from a recruiter back in December. Things to brush up on: I believe I have some more. Electrical Power/Theory: What is Ohm’s Law Explain the Power Triangle. Know how to describe the power factor in detail and why the is important What is the difference between KVA and KW, why does it matter? Tell me how an ATS or MBT works What do you know about UPS theory and what are the major types? Describe selective tripping What is the difference between common and ground? Mechanical Systems/Theory: Know the refrigeration cycle and be able to draw it out Describe the diesel engine cycle Explain how a gasoline engine and a diesel engine are different What is the purpose of an expansion tank in a closed loop system? Discuss the difference between air cooling and water cooling in a data system. Know why Glycol is used in data center chill water systems How does a heat exchanger work? What effects the rate of heat transfer in a heat exchanger Discuss the difference between latent heat and sensible heat. Electrical Emergency Generators (electrical side) Power distribution Switch gear Uninterrupted Power Supplies (UPS) Mechanical Emergency Gas Turbine Generators (mechanical side-know the start-up procedures) HVAC and Air Conditioning Dehydrators Glycol chill systems Monitoring Systems that monitor temperature, humidity, smoke, fires, etc. Fire Suppression Installed equipment to fight fires (water, CO2 or chemical based) Pre-Action or Dual-Action systems (know the difference)

Thanks man, I've already been brushing up/learning all of the above. Time to make it second nature. Please post anything else you come up with. Recruiter just emailed me, said expect for the call to last 45 minutes, which is shorter than I expected. From other searches, I've found there may even be a third call to test my Googlyness (fit for Google). Either way I want to be able to answer everything like it's what I live and breathe. I'm at a huge disadvantage due to my lack of experience in critical facilities, so I need to be twice as prepared as any other candidates. Jesse Sic Semper Tyrannis

Was another technical interview, but more Data Center/Industrial focused. I didn't know the answer to a number of the questions, got about 60-70% right and exposed myself about lack of data center experience. I can't imagine that I would be moved forward? The job listing listed industrial and data center experience as preferred and they have my resume as well as me telling them my past experience. My only hope is that they realized that with my previous knowledge and skills set the only way I could have answered some of the questions I did know was that I took initiative and prepared for the interview and was able to answer most questions. Hopefully I demonstrated that I am intelligent and capable of learning things and am worth training to make up for deficiencies. Another interview with Vertiv on Friday. Maybe if I fail enough times interviewing I'll get so good at it someone will take a chance on me. Interviewing for a job I don't have all the prerequisite knowledge for sucks. In the past, my interviews have all been short and offered job on the spot or next day because of either my reputation or rock solid understanding of requirements and then some. I'm running out of companies to apply at, if anyone has an 'in' for me or can suggest other lesser known companies, or ones not listing publicly openings, please let me know. I was really hoping to land at Google, hopefully I carried myself well enough to get my foot in the door. Jesse Sic Semper Tyrannis
