Okay, so let's say that you have enough firearms, magazines, and ammunition now that you can afford to put some of it in "long term storage" winkwink, possibly in a place not easy to find. How do you go about it and where did you learn? What are your methods to insure that you don't find it all rusted, rotted, and inert? Did you buy containers or was there Home Depot involved? Caching for long term SHTF type storage can be problematic unless you have some type of control on the property you are caching at....or you have confidence it is such a low traffic area that it will not be discovered. Oh and have the coordinates and a good paper map to where it is  But if you have the place for it I would look at one of those "food saver" vacuum thingys. | |||

PVC tubes filled with desicant. If firearm, coat in preservative. Not sure about ammo other than keep it dry. Then seal the tube with end caps. And as previously stated - make a map. ------------------ SBrooks | |||

I'm thinking that vacuum sealing ammo "battle pack style" would keep it moisture free and you can toss a desiccant pack inside as extra protection. | |||

Yep. Guns in safes with moisture control and regular oiling. Ammo in metal ammo cans. Mags organized in ammo cans, plastic bins, and drawers. I have no reason to go bury my guns in the backyard or sink them in a lake. | |||

The big question is do you take the 50 rd boxes of 9mm, and dump them onto ammo cans to save room, or do you keep them in the 50 rd boxes and then put the 50 rd boxes into the cans? I've done both. I at least keep the labels with lot numbers in the box with the loose rounds so I know the brand, grains, etc when I dump them into the cans. It's so much more efficient to get rid of all that cardboard from the boxes. . | |||

Depends. Bulk ammo goes loose into ammo cans, with a label with lot number included. This is for stuff I buy in large quantities, like multiple cases of Speer Lawman 9mm 124, Federal HST 9mm 124 +P, and Federal or Prvi M193. Smaller quantities of various flavors of ammo that aren't enough to fill their own ammo can stay in their original packaging. But they're still sorted in ammo cans by caliber. | |||

Did you report them lost? The ATF says you have to report lost or stolen firearms within 48 hours of knowledge. Only give the "boating accident yesterday" response if/when needed.  (I know I am breaking the first rule of Fight Club.) | |||

Nah. Leave the fifty round boxes in the 1000 round cases (500 for rifle), stack them on the welded angle iron shelves in the seatrain container. When the shelves start to sag, weld up some braces and insert as needed. There is space efficiency and there is time efficiency. I’ll take time efficiency over space efficiency any day. YMMV. Of course, maintain plenty of desiccants in the container. | |||
