Student child tax question Login/Join

Youngest daughter is a full time student and is starting her first job. I looked at the IRS info and can’t make heads or tails of it. I think she should file exempt on her W4. I claim her on my taxes still and I don’t think she will earn more than 6-8000 dollars the whole year. If I read the IRS stuff correctly she would owe nothing as long as she stays under 12,000 for the year.

Any input guys?

If she had zero tax in 2018 and EXPECTS to have zero tax in 2019 then she can claim exempt. That lets you avoid having to file just to get the withholding back.

She gets a standard deduction amount of 12,200 for 2019 which offsets the first 12,200 in income.

You should check your State also as the standard deduction and/or exemptions that apply at the State level may not bring her down to a zero tax at the State level. Most States have a separate State version of the W-4 if you need to claim something other than exempt on the State.
