OK, I have very basic line chart. I just want to make the background different colors within one band, example, the range is a % from 20% to 100% I would like the band between 70% and 80% to be green so there is a nice visual stripe of what the target range is. Is there a way to do that? Don't weep for the stupid, or you will be crying all day

Maybe conditional formating from the robbon choices? ________________________________________________________ You never know...

Plot each line segment (like 70-80%) as a separate data series, then color each one. Further explanation: I'm assuming you have an x/y data set. Let's say red is x=1,2,3,4,5 and green is x=5, 6,7,8,9,10. Note: to get the line to connect between each series, you'll have to overlap the points from the previous series, ie - Series 2 will include point 5 from Series 1. I'm going to assume, for simplicity, that we have a linear line with a slope of 1, so that the x values and y values match. Instead of plotting points 1-10 at once as a single series, plot 1-5 as Series 1 (red) and 5-10 as Series 2 (green). If you need extra assistance, shoot me your file and I'll show you. flesheatingvirus@yahoo.com Example I threw together: Last resort: Save the line plot as a .PNG or .JPG file and recolor in Photoshop! I much prefer using Igor Pro for making sweet graphs/plots, but it is geared towards the scientific graphing audience, so while it can do a LOT more modifications to graphs, it may not be as user friendly as Excel for simple data sets. ________________________________________ -- Fear is the mind-killer. I think the OP is wanting the BACKGROUND to be a different color in places, not the line itself. flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth

Easy enough. 1) Create your graph. 2) Click on the top menu Insert then Shapes and select the rectangular shape. 3) Draw the rectangle on top of the chart. For the picture, I drew it on the band between 80% and 70%. 4) right click on the rectangle. Select Format Shape. Select Solid Fill, pick the color, select the Transparency. On mine, I chose 63% so that the line shows through. Under line, select No Line. 5) You're done. - Rey "The Excel Whisperer" HRH "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Rey HRH had a better way than my idea. I moved the chart to powerpoint and added the transparent rectangles there.
