Very cool. Wonder how long it would take to get the gumption to do something like that today?

Well, first, you need to submit the standard Gumption Requisition form to the government...

That's one up on old Red Adair.

It only stands to reason that where there's sacrifice, there's someone collecting the sacrificial offerings. Where there's service, there is someone being served. The man who speaks to you of sacrifice is speaking of slaves and masters, and intends to be the master.

Not really. Red Adair wasn't given a shot at putting it out using his methods.

Besides, the Soviets other attempt to put out a blowout with a nuc failed.

Thanks for cluing me in there was a video. I saw only the thee pictures on top.

It didn't happen the way I thought it did by sucking out the oxygen from the fire. The video shows it as choking off the fuel supply.

That was some pretty fast thinking and decision making.

We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. The way this thing furiously burned for three years helps me appreciate just how much frik'n natural gas there is in the world's gas fields.

I think you missed this part:
quote:
For the first time in 1,064 days, quiet descended on the area. The jetlike roar of the gas well had been silenced.
The well fire started in 1963 but the nuc wasn't detonated until 1966.

It's still an interesting accomplishment

I bet Red could have snuffed that without having to resort to (literally) nuking it.

Though politically the Soviets may have been different from us as night is to day, in the end we're all human and want the same things: big wet titties, a cold drink, and blowing stuff up.

Isn't the Centralia mine fire still going? 55 years is enough, maybe we can try this.

Thanks for the correction. I read three YEARS as three days.

We have something almost as stupid nearby in norrth Georgia, an attempt to build a nuclear airplane and a number of other crazy experiments after that didn't work out so well.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urGYMs0-UcM

They used terms like "air shielded nuclear reactor". That actually means not shielded nuclear reactor. They did that to study the effects of radiation on the background environment like wildlife and the nearby forest.
