Trump calls for probe into claims Obama administration tried to give Iran access to US banks

http://www.foxnews.com/politic...ess-to-us-banks.html

President Trump on Thursday called for an investigation into allegations that the Obama administration tried to give Iran access to the U.S. financial system by sidestepping sanctions.

"The Obama Administration is now accused of trying to give Iran secret access to the financial system of the United States. This is totally illegal," Trump tweeted.

Donald J. Trump

@realDonaldTrump

The Obama Administration is now accused of trying to give Iran secret access to the financial system of the United States. This is totally illegal. Perhaps we could get the 13 Angry Democrats to divert some of their energy to this “matter” (as Comey would call it). Investigate!
11:15 AM - Jun 7, 2018

A draft report by the Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations found that, in early 2016, the Obama Treasury Department issued a license to Bank Muscat to authorize the conversion of Iran’s rials to euros through “any United States depository institution.”

According to the subcommittee, Iran had $5.7 billion in assets in the Omani bank, and wanted to convert it via the U.S. financial system as it was the most efficient means, “even though U.S. sanctions prohibited it,” according to the report.

The report says that government officials said in subsequent testimony to Congress, though, that Iran would not be granted access to the financial system.

OBAMA ADMIN ALLEGEDLY GAVE IRAN ACCESS TO US FINANCIAL SYSTEM

The report found that the plan failed only when the two U.S. banks refused to participate, citing the complexity and the unwanted appearance involved in processing an Iranian transaction.

By itself, the Obama Treasury Department's issuing of a license to allow Iran to convert $5.7 billion it held at a bank in Oman was not illegal. If the Omani bank had allowed the exchange without such a license, it would have violated sanctions that bar Iran from transactions that touch the U.S. financial system.

But the Senate report revived criticism of how the Obama administration sought to accommodate Iran in connection with the nuclear deal. Trump suggested Thursday that Special Counsel Robert Mueller should be looking at this instead of the Russia probe.

“Perhaps we could get the 13 Angry Democrats to divert some of their energy to this 'matter' (as Comey would call it),” he said. “Investigate!”

Republicans have pointed to the revelation as proof that the Obama administration was "desperate" for the Iran deal.

"The Obama administration misled the American people and Congress because they were desperate to get a deal with Iran," said Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, who chairs the panel.

But a former administration official disputed the subcommittee's conclusion, saying the Treasury Department never authorized Iran to access U.S. investments or markets, conduct commercial transactions in U.S. dollars or open correspondent accounts at U.S. banks.

“This specific license cannot be described as ‘granting access to the U.S. financial system,’” the former official said. “This specific license was in fulfillment of JCPOA commitments to give Iran access to pools of its money held overseas. It was aimed solely to allow the movement of Iran’s own funds stranded at an Omani bank into euros at a European bank, where Iran could then make use of them.”

If there's any Lib melting left to be done, this should do the trick Big Grin

The Trump administration is doing away with a series of affirmative-action policy documents put in place under former President Barack Obama that encourage colleges and universities to use race in admissions processes to promote campus diversity.

The guidelines, implemented under Obama between 2010 and 2016, put forth legal recommendations that officials in the Trump White House say “mislead schools to believe that legal forms of affirmative action are simpler to achieve than the law allows,” according to a report in The Wall Street Journal.

The Trump administration contends that the Obama-era guidelines go far beyond what the Supreme Court has decided on in regard to affirmative action. The court has ruled that colleges and universities can use affirmative action to help minority students get into school, but conservatives over the years have argued that these programs hurt the chances of white and Asian-American applicants.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions cited “improper rulemaking.” He said, “The American people deserve to have their voices heard and a government that is accountable to them. When issuing regulations, federal agencies must abide by constitutional principles and follow the rules set forth by Congress and the President. In previous administrations, however, agencies often tried to impose new rules on the American people without any public notice or comment period, simply by sending a letter or posting a guidance document on a website. That’s wrong, and it’s not good government.”

The Trump administration “could just be rescinding the Obama-era polices,” Ilya Shapiro, a senior fellow at the Cato Institute, told Fox News. “But it could also change how past Supreme Court decisions are interpreted and say that schools can’t rely just on race and need to present other ways of achieving their diversity goals.”

The move to do away with the guidelines comes as the Justice Department looks into whether Harvard discriminated against Asian-American applicants by holding them to a higher standard during its admissions process.

Students for Fair Admissions, a nonprofit opposed to affirmative action, said in a study that Harvard routinely assigns lower scores to Asian students in subjective rating categories meant to measure attributes such as likability, courage and kindness, putting them at a major disadvantage compared with white students.

Edward Blum, a legal strategist who founded Students for Fair Admissions, issued a statement saying his group's filing "exposes the startling magnitude of Harvard's discrimination."

Harvard blasted the study in an opposing court filing and submitted a countering study that found no evidence of bias. In a statement, the school called the lawsuit an attack on its ability to consider race in admissions, which it says is necessary to assemble a diverse mix of students.

“Harvard will continue to vigorously defend our right, and that of other colleges and universities nationwide, to seek the educational benefits that come from a class that is diverse on multiple dimensions,” the institution said.

The studies were filed in Boston's federal court as both sides attempted to persuade a judge to end the suit before it reaches trial, which has been scheduled to start in October.

Democrats slammed the news about doing away with the Obama-era policies.

“The Trump administration isn’t just willfully blind to the reality of systemic racism — it's coldly indifferent to its destructive consequences, and it's absolutely committed to dismantling any efforts to address our nation's original sin," Democratic National Committe Chairman Tom Perez said in a statement. “Democrats believe that diversity and inclusion are profoundly American values. We believe that a quality education opens the doors of opportunity, and that everyone deserves a meaningful seat at the table."

The Justice investigation has also drawn a strong rebuke from numerous organizations representing minority groups, which argue that this is a step toward doing away with affirmative action altogether.

“White women and Asian-Americans have been the biggest beneficiaries of affirmative action programs,” Vicki Shu, vice president of public affairs at OCA – Asian Pacific American Advocates, said in statement. “We have an obligation to ensure that that opportunity continues to exist for other under-represented communities.”

The Cato Institute’s Shapiro maintained that there are other ways besides affirmative action to create a more diverse student body.

“There’s the socioeconomic argument,” he said. “But there’s also looking into better outreach at high schools, better financial aid packages and reducing other priorities like those for legacy students and athletes.”

Yes, please, do lecture me about the "systemic racism" in the most left-leaning bastions higher ed has to offer.

If affirmative action is so "just" and "reasonable," please explain why the .gov needed to force it on Hah-vard and the like at regulatory gunpoint.

We have good work from the Senate Judiciary Comm, House Judiciary Comm, and House Intel Comm.

My personal opinion is the Senate Intel Comm has been close to useless. It is chaired by Richard Burr (R) and apparently actually led by Mark Warner (D).

The Sen Intel Comm just released a summary of initial findings from their 18 month study of Russian interference in the 2016 election

link:

https://www.burr.senate.gov/do...-ssci-ica-assessment

7 pages long. This product is consistent w my long standing contempt for the work of this comm. You can draw your own conclusions.

The only interesting part to me was they said the Steele dossier was not used to develop the Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA) of Jan 2017. The dossier "did not in any way inform the analysis in the ICA".

Why not ? "because it was unverified" and "had not been disseminated as serialized intelligence reporting" (whatever that means)

We have been told by Sen Grassley that the dossier was the main evidence to get the Oct 2016 FISA warrant against Carter Page.

But yet the CIA, NSA, and FBI would not use it for the ICA because it was unverified. But good enough to take to a FISA court. ?

Maybe someone should wake up Richard Burr and make him aware of how significant that position is, and how much it is in conflict with how the FBI used it in their counterintel operation.

I just read 7 pages of jibberish.

We need to replace Senator Richard Burr NC with a true Conservative who actually wants to work for the people.

Seems Mr. Burr is doing a whole lot of nothing in D.C. For the great people of North Carolina.

My guess is that intelligence is not prerequisite for being on the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

What exactly is this document anyway?

Looks almost like a sticky note.
Pretty plain Jane.
It doesn't even list the members of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." I've watched that video over a dozen times.

I'm thankful that he's sacrificed all he has to put his life on hold for us. Just think about it, as a billionaire he could spend the rest of his life relaxing on a beach. Instead he's fighting the entire MSM and 60% of Congress. I'm half his age and there's no way I could wake up in the mornings knowing what he has to deal with.

Thanks for saving us from Hil, thank you for your SCOTUS selection(s), thank you for bringing jobs back, thank you for protecting the border, thank you for improving our international status, thank you for calling out fake news.

Shit my finger is cramping up I'll have to return later to finish my thanks for DTJ. So much winning.

UK reportedly tells Trump he cannot meet with Brexit architect Nigel Farage

http://www.foxnews.com/politic...ct-nigel-farage.html

The U.K. government has reportedly told President Trump he must not meet Brexit architect and former U.K. Independence Party leader Nigel Farage when Trump visits the U.K. later this month.

The U.K. Daily Telegraph, citing a source within the British government, reports that 10 Downing Street made it clear that Trump “must not meet Farage” during his working visit to the U.K. on July 13.

Trump has embraced Farage, who is also a Fox News contributor, and called him “the man behind Brexit” during the 2016 campaign.

Farage told Fox News he would not comment on any conversations he had with the White House but said the Telegraph report was “utterly consistent” with past behavior from the U.K. government.

“The one thing they do not want me doing is having a photograph with the U.S. president when he’s in London with both of us saying ‘Brexit is a great idea, why doesn’t the government just get on with it?’”

A Downing Street spokesman referred Fox News to comments it made to the Telegraph, saying it was "not even aware of a meeting being requested" and that "either way we are not trying to stop one."

Farage played a key role as UKIP leader in putting pressure on then-Prime Minister David Cameron’s government to call for the 2016 referendum on whether the U.K. should leave the European Union, and also for securing a win for the “Leave” campaign.

In particular, Farage was key in promoting limiting immigration as a defining issue of the “Leave” campaign, just as then-candidate Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign was doing the same.

Since the Brexit result, Farage has been a thorn in the government’s side as he has repeatedly blasted the government for dragging its feet on implementing Brexit, and for being too soft in negotiating with Brussels.

“Number 10, the establishment Conservative Party, have a pathological hatred of me,” Farage told Fox News on Friday. “They see me as being the reason they had to offer a referendum, they see me as being one of the major reasons they lost the referendum and now they have to implement something they don’t believe in. They hate it and they’ll never forgive me until the day I die.”

rump ruffled feathers in November 2016 when, shortly after his election win, he suggested Farage as British ambassador to the U.S.

“He would do a great job,” he tweeted.

Farage told Fox News that the reported red line from the British government reflects not just a nervousness about Farage, but also about Trump.

“I think they’re nervous about what Trump is going to say about NATO, about Brexit. I think they’re very nervous indeed,” he said.

Trump’s visit is expected to be met with significant protests from left-wing activists, promoted by members of the left-wing Labour Party who have repeatedly called for Trump to be uninvited.

UK PRIME MINISTER MAY UNDER PRESSURE TO CANCEL TRUMP VISIT OVER MIGRANT CONTROVERSY

Last month, Prime Minister Theresa May was grilled by MPs with calls to scrap the visit, particularly after the controversy surrounding illegal immigration and the separation of families at the U.S.-Mexico border. While she said “the pictures of children being held in what appear to be cages are deeply disturbing,” she defended the Trump visit.

“We have a special and longstanding relationship with the United States and I think it is right -- there will be a range of issues I will be discussing with President Trump ... and I think it’s important that we make sure that when we see the president of the United States here in the United Kingdom we’re able to have those discussions,” she said.
