"As cool as the other side of the pillow." Lighting up the Pratt & Whitney, idling and then following a pretty 51 out on the runway. Like most WWII aircraft buffs, I like the pretty ones: the P-51, the F4U, and the Spit. There's a stunningly beautiful P-47 out at the Udvar-Hazy Annex at Dulles though and they have really grown on me. That R-2800..21 (I believe) radial is beautiful to hear. Very nice. Like you say even the most hardcore WWII aircraft buff tends to fall for the pretty ones. That said the P-47 and Hurricane are among my favorites. They have a rugged beauty that becomes apparent once in the air. Success always occurs in private, and failure in full view. Complacency sucks…

I started studying military history and equipment at a relatively young age. From the very beginning the P-47D, B-26,P-61 and the Ju-87 were my favorite airplanes from WW2. The P-47 may not be the sleekest or the prettiest like the P-51, or the F4F but it was robust, and a great ground attack aircraft.

Spiritually Imperfect |
Having grown up building models of the P-47 (and the others mentioned), this was a great thing to watch. I really need to take my 11 year old daughter to an air show, so she can see them. Thanks for the video.

Too old to run, too mean to quit! |
Thanks for the walk down memory lane. IIRC, part of my "study" of WW2 aircraft included the P47. and when they changed the prop to 4 blades the test pilot thought something was wrong because the performance was so much better. Tough old birds. They could take as much as they gave in combat. Many of their pilots had a great sense of security from the 47.. ______________________________________________ Life is short. It’s shorter with the wrong gun…

The P-47 is one of my favorite fighter planes from that era. It looks especially cool with the bubble canopy. No one's life, liberty or property is safe while the legislature is in session.- Mark Twain

The p-47 has always been one of my favorite aircraft. Most produced US fighter, it could dance at altitude thanks to its supercharger - and when the paddle blade prop replaced the toothpick, it really could perform. Faster roll rate than a 190 supposedly. That same aircraft could come down on the deck and take out a train or strafe some aircraft, the PW 2800 could lose a jug and still get type pilot home. Eight-50 cal. machine guns! I read they could spit out 7200 rds/min. That's a lot of damage _______________________________________________________ despite them

The P47 has always been one of my favorites owing to my grandfather working for Republic building them. He was a little guy so they stuck him inside the fuselage bucking rivets. He died of cancer in his early fifties and I have always believed being stuck inside those planes with the insulation and smoking 2-3 packs a day led to his early demise. A P47 is a big plane. My dad, a P51 pilot, used to joke that when things got bad a P47 pilot could run around inside the fuselage to dodge the incoming.

God bless your grandfather, who may have built the P-47 my grandfather flew. I'll find a pic and a story later. -Rob I predict that there will be many suggestions and statements about the law made here, and some of them will be spectacularly wrong. - jhe888 A=A

To the best of my knowledge, unlike the Hellcat and Corsair, the P-47 never used anything other than a 4 bladed prop.
